I was reading the book "Video Game Art" by Nic Kelman in which he discusses the impact of computer games in our modern society. And to be honest I was surprised to learn that 85% of Male game players chose to play female characters in computer games!

What does that mean?

Men secretly desire to be a woman?

After all human life is based on the Female Prototype so this could be true.

But the other answer could be that men prefer to look at female characters on a screen than males ones because female form is far more beautiful than the male ones?

As for me I have never been conscious of choosing a female or male characters. But then again First Person Shooters like Quake and Unreal you don't see much of the character you play so in these types of game it does not matter.

But if you look at male characters in games like Zelda you will see that male characters are almost angrogenous. So perhaps it is true again that men secretly desire to be women!!! Yikes!!! :D

1. I am man and yes I always choose to play female characters.
2. I am a man and I aways choose to play male characters.
3. I am a woman and I always choose to play female characters.
4. I am a woman and I always choose to play male characters.
5. Other.

Once again you tend to put the options in absolutes....

I don't mind playing as male or female, I tend to look at each characters strengths and weaknesses first rather than their gender... But if I'm playing a game that is 2 or more players I tend to not care what gender the character is if I'm playing with other females, but if I'm playing with males I tend to choose the female characters automatically...

the last time we had a gaming system it was the PS2. It's still sitting there collecting dust because we never have time to play. And now, it's time to upgrade isn't it? The only game we had (being the big video game players we are  ) that fits this poll is the Mortal Kombat games. Most of the times, we both picked Scorpion because it's easier to win with him. We had two or three versions of it, and on one of them, you could choose a female character who was wearing basically underwear, but she wasn't a very good fighter, and so she wasn't picked very often. The other female characters were decent enough, but Scorpion seemed to be the best player. Besides, who needs to look at video game women for a thrill?

Damn it, is Minesweeper a man or a woman?

That's not really a role play type game though? :p And you don't really have the option of being a man or woman! So it's not like you chose one over the other....

I have no idea what you're talking about. I guess I don't play computer games. 85%? That's a pretty strong correlation. I wonder how accurate that is.

I played World of Warcraft, a MMORPG. I used primarily male characters, but my female priest is my favorite.

Erm computer games virgil ;-) I don't think they had them in the 1950s ;-)

The figure comes from data from RPG games online.

It varies . . . my favorite character to play is Yoshi. :p Most of the RPG-type games I've been playing recently have male characters and you don't have a choice. But I don't mind a strong female character now and then.

So according to your information, what does it say about those unconscious people when it comes to choosing either a male or a female character? Are they (you) asexual?

I've mostly played female characters (Yey, I'm a WoW nerd too!) Why? Because the male characters looked so ridiculously over pumped! they were completely disproportionate.
However... Then the Draenai came along, and yes... My Priest is male :) *For the Naaru*
So is my undead warlock... muhaha!

I've discussed this tones with my RP online buddies, and yes, many many males play female characters. In fact, back in the days of my female warrior, the first question i got when getting to know another player would be "Are you really a girl?" :)

Something interesting to observe. My friend tried playing a female character for a few days and came back shocked by the level of sexual harrasment he was exposed to. He appologised deeply on behalf of his male associates.

Well, I don't play computer RPG-s. I play tabletop and live RPGs.

Oh sure, I do that too. And yeah, I mostly play female. I was going to attend a massive KGB event, and would have been a male sailor but something came up.

I've heard tell that males chose female computer characters because one is constantly behind the character in game. And let's face it, les femmes have fine features...

May be or bisexual.

But I am obsecenely heterosexual ;-)

Yes. That too. But women tend to be like this also? with Gravity defying boobs?

Do you think it's because they secretly want to be females?

or it is something else?

Yes. Some males can be real bastardos!!

No, I don't think it's cause they want to be females. I'm going to be a little foreward here; comes from my environment...

I think everyone should be interested in their sexuality, and i don't 'believe' in the categories that people are placed into in that respect. I don't pick a male character because i want to be male, and I don't pick a male character because i want to interact with the female characters.
Truthfully I picked that particular male figure because i found the voice, and the posture comforting. (And it has a tail!)
Perhaps, in this roleplaying universe it allows them to distance themselves from their character. That way they create a whole new person rather than a shadow of themselves? I'm not sure. My ex, as well as my little brother play female characters, and into those figures they pour a completely different person than they would a male. However, as my mother (also a WoW nerd) cleverly observed, you can nearly always tell when it's a woman playing a male or vice versa. The figures often become very steroetyped.

I think it's great to try it out. For example my friend discovering the level of harrasment you receive as a female characters. It may seem far fetched, but putting onself into the shoes (and robes) of the opposite sex may bring you insightful surprises.
Sigh... now i want to play WoW and not do my exam... Anyone here an expert on Macro? No?
Pass me a sword anyday! :D

If I play a game, which I rarely do nowadays for no other reason than lack of time, I mixed it up, male, female, the whole bunch, just to figure out all the possibilities with characters. I don't like MMO games, way too boring for me. I like a good story that I can follow and immerse myself in like the PC RPG, adventure or whatever, something that is more than just go to A to kill B and proceed to C for reward. So my motive for playing either male or female depend on me uncovering multiple aspects of the game world and to experience the differences. Some games implement that well, others don't. In MMO games, I woud play both sides too. Aesthetics do matter though, a good looking game is great. What I like about Elder Scrolls IV is that the females actually look realistic, with full body armour, instead of skimpy chainmal with huge knockers sticking out. (Not that there is anything wrong with that in the right setting) It's great for immersion when a bandit turns out to be female under all that armour which you strip and sell at the next town. Not that there is anything realistic about the whole thing called gaming but it's fun.

Oh, and the harassment is one of the dumbest thing ever (well, the people doing the harassing anyway).

I used to kill millions of lemmings, but nowadays the game would face protests for being insensitive to animals. :p

Once again you tend to put the options in absolutes....Which is why I have to choose other. Always and Never are strong words, and one can usually find exceptions and in-betweens.

So according to your information, what does it say about those unconscious people when it comes to choosing either a male or a female character? I somehow doubt that unconcious people choose much of anything? ;) :D

Something interesting to observe. My friend tried playing a female character for a few days and came back shocked by the level of sexual harrasment he was exposed to.Yes... Very good point. Quite an eye-opener, I'll wager... I experienced something similar as a summer temp at the local hospital when I was young(er): Those middle aged women ganged up on any unsuspecting young male within range (Like me!), and acted worse than most people did when I did my military service. Anyway, I decided there and then that I would never treat women that way.

poor Virge, there a lots of different types of computer games, not all of them are role playing games. heeheehee, I could recommend loads of cool old DOS platform jump and run/run and shoot (?? whatever) games to you. but of course, I'm not going to introduce you to such a pointless, viceful, timeconsuming hobby :D

Jeepers... I just like playing a game, I don't really mind what sex my character is. I must say though, Lara Croft is pretty sexy...

Or maybe I'm just thinking of Angelina Jolie. Oh well.

I guess I don't really think about sex of a character while I play games. I just like the thrill of a game. :)
