grrrrrrrr, here's my latest pet peeve (apart from obesity and old grannies):
the other day, my best friend and me went for a walk with our kids (a group for kids that we run). We went to a lake to feed the ducks.
but duck feeding is illegal and if they catch you at it, they'll slam a hefty fine on you (up to a couple of hundred Euros or even more). there were even some park rangers (not the trained National Park variety, unemployed ppl who get paid a shameful wage by the unemployment office)
the reason behind this is, if I remember correctly, is that when you feed the ducks they will breed a lot and there will be an overpopulation of ducks.
Ok, I can see some logic behind this, e.g. the ducks will crowd out other water birds. I can see why you don't want this to happen in the country side and in natural places. but right in the middle of a big city? I'm an environmentalist myself, but this goes too far, in my opinion. I can also understand why feeding pigeons isn't a good idea, seeing as they sh!t up the whole place and their poo can destroy historical buildings.
I mean, is it such a wonder that grannies and kids have to languish in front of the TV or playstation, when harmless pleasures like duck feeding are prohibited?
plus, there are a couple of practical solutions, such as allowing duck feeding for 3 days a week but not on the other days. or setting up a vending machine with duck food and when it's sold out it's sold out and that's that.

It's illegal to feed ducks? I have a pond behind my apartment where I feed all my stale bread to my little duck friends.

It's largely a matter of to whom the ducks are being fed. To whom is it illegal to feed ducks?

Well, there we go another Mod dragging the thread to the gutter. Meh, at least she avoided all allusions to the white stuff from the pidgeons;)
Dang. I'm the only one who voted for "I don't care." There aren't many ducks where I live.

Over here we're not allowed to feed seagulls, I'm not sure about the ducks though, and from what I've been told, we're not allowed to feed the seagulls not because they may overpopulate (they've done that already) but because of WHAT people are feeding them. People are feeding them things that are harmful to the birds and killing them. At least that is what I've been told, and I don't think there's a fine for it though, we're just told it's a really really bad idea.

I had to look it up. There is one, apparently. Learn something new every day . . . :p
But about the actual ducks . . . it seems odd to make something like that illegal. But on the other hand, I get really annoyed when people feed birds (esp. pigeons and stuff) because they are all fluttering around and they are gross and can spread diseases. Yuck. So I think in a nature-y area or a park it's fine, but on the street it can be kind-of gross. I know some food places with outdoor seating and they have signs on all the tables saying not to feed the birds. Unfortunately, recommendations like that don't always work.

I can't believe you don't like grannies!!! My heart is broken. I guess fat grannies are out for you too.
ok, so I googled "feed the ducks" and I understand why Sleepy doesn't like old grannies.....we don't know anything anymore! Who would have thought. I'll think twice next time Poppy tells me he's going to the lake to feed the ducks.

reading Granny's response reminds me of sneaking marshmallows in to the zoo to feed the bears- They are pretty good at catching marshmallows! now, which is worse- feeding bears in the zoo, or feeding ducks at the park?

it depends on what "feeding the bears" mean.
