Enlightenment

Daring now to question things that once I thought were carved in stone,
The mysteries behind the very beliefs I hold to be the truth and upon which I stand.
Has cost me many friends and acquaintances, now I often walk the path alone—

Yet the mists that so many times clouded up my mind seem to be gone…
No, I’m not saying that I know more than any other mortal man.
Daring now to question things that once I thought were carved in stone,

I have reached beyond my barriers and found firm ground to stand upon.
They say “You cannot mix science and religion!” I’ve found that you can.
But it has cost me many friends and acquaintances, now I often walk the path alone—

For there are many who think that science seeks to topple God from off His throne;
While others feel religion answers every question ever given by any man.
Daring now to question things that once I thought were carved in stone,

Universal truths and patterns fall into place in this puzzle, but some just don’t belong.
What I dare believe is up to me, perhaps you may have a different view or scan—
It has cost me many friends and acquaintances, now I often walk the path alone—

It’s a world of endless possibilities, always remembering that I could be the one that’s wrong,
You won’t hear me preaching that everyone must live according to my plan…
Daring now to question things that once I thought were carved in stone,
Has cost me many friends and acquaintances, now I often walk the path alone—

I forget the name of this particular form, (it's not a villanelle, is it?) but how deftly you employ it, how simultaneously wise & sad are the repeated lines!

Very well, Pen! Your poems tend to get me in this mood that we call contemplating. One can also not help to appreciate the rhythm and rhyme they contain in themselves.
