I'm traveling for business right now. Tonight my coworkers and I went out to dinner. Our waitress had an eye patch.

It made me wonder...Ya know, what happened? Is it completely gone? did she have surgery? Did her pet bird peck it out? As she came to our table a few times she was messing with that patch, I was trying to look but didn't want to be obvious. Finally she said the patch was bothering her and she had a sty. (I didn't ask she volunteered) It wasn't anything near where my imagination was going but at least my curiosity was satiated. I guess she got tried of the patch, on the last few trips to our table she had removed the patch. Her eyelid was huge and red and greasy. Slightly not pleasant to look at.

I don't know why I'm relating this adventure other then I had a few cocktails and with the time difference I'm still wide awake.

well, it is gross. I mean you're trying to eat and you have a greasy eye to contend with. Someone could use that in a book - the book could be about anything and then the situation with the eye patch would be this background moment for a transition in the story...

Was it a greasy spoon diner? Or a chain that we've all heard of?

Did you order french fries? Are you sure that was grease on your plate and not remants of her eye balm? Things to ponder...

Here's what else I don't understand....When the flight crew have to stay overnight in other cities who makes the reservations for them at the hotel? Do they have to do it themselves? Is there someone at the home office taking care of it? Do they just have a block of rooms they always keep?

My guess is that the airlines has a deal with certain hotels and puts them up. Next time I travel I'll try to ask a stewardess.

Your probably right. Now that I think about it they do have a set schedule of what planes are going where and when so I would theink they would know how many hotel rooms they need in each city.

The last time I watched andrew Lloyd Webber was on and Graham decided to cast for modern Jesus' for Jesus Christ superstar. There was a juggling Jesus, a Mime Jesus, etc...

I'm traveling again. I don't like it. I checked into my hotel last night, went to my room and the room hadn't been cleaned yet. It's kinda gross seeing a strangers short curlies in the sink.

Slightly embarassed. This morning I left my cloths and stuff all over my hotel room, I meant to put the "Do not disturb" sign on my door when I left so the maid would come in and see all my crap scattered about.

I forgot to put the sign out and the maid just cleaned around all my crap.

It gets tiring if you go through a stretch of frequent business trips. There's usually no time to relax, except at an airport, and that's no fun. And being away from home I kind of miss some of my personal amentities. But I will say that sometimes it's good to get out of the office. I haven't traveled since before Christmas and I coud sure use a trip right now. Unfortunately i got too much going on at home.

Yes, the hotel might be relaxing, but the traveling about certainly isn't. What bugs me is that I don't have my books handy or a gym available or snacks in the refrig. ;) But with laptops and ipods and cell phones, you should be able to keep yourself busy.

By the way, God's gonna get you for taking the Bible. :p Actually I think you're allowed, though I never have. I could be wrong though.

You've just reminded me, papayahed - some years ago I went round the Hershey factory and there was a huge notice hanging over the Kisses' production line, saying (in big black capital letters):

IMPROPERLY WRAPPED KISSES MUST BE REPROCESSED

I wanted a copy of that for use with future boy-friends! :D

And the Mormon Bible? We had a friend who was a member of the Gideon Society - he came to stay with us and noticed we didn't have a copy of the Bible by the bed in our guest room, so on his departure he ceremoniously presented one to us. Fortunately he wrote in it or I would have had to explain to every subsequent guest that no, I hadn't nicked it from a hotel....So give it back - never mind God, just think of all the explaining you're going to have to do.

Just remember to wear gloves while holding the envelop and wipe the book well so that your finger prints cannot be traced back to you.

One of my favorite things is to bring home my leftovers from dinner and have it for breakfast the next day. Last night is no exception. We had Italian and I got Chicken and Spinach Canneloni. New Dilemma. I've been looking at houses. I found one that is under my budget, it's a cute older house but the current owners were in the middle of a redo when they needed to sell. Still, it is a good opportunity to have a go at getting it done exactly the way you wish (at least the money will be spent for a good cause, so to speak).

How about the location?

papayahed

Location is decent and the neighborhood is cute.

To finished what the current owners have started isn't a lot, mostly cosmetic like painting, and grouting tiles. However, the bathroom was barely touched and if I'm going to complete the bathroom I may as well do it the way I want and if I do that I might as well make a walk in closet in the master bedroom..... ya see my dilemma?

pussnboots

well in that case, good point. If you hire a contractor just make sure you get a reputable one and price around first. Also make sure they are licensed and insured and get everything in writing.

Niamh
06-04-2008, 06:38 PM
But when you look at the house do you see yourself living there?
Grouting and painting aint bad. To sort that out you can invite friends to a fix it cocktail party, where everyone does a little job in your house and you supply them with cocktails after! :D fun way to solve a little problem. As for a walkin closet. Do you need it right now? or can you wait a while?

Has it actually got a workable bathroom or would you have to install one asap? If there is one that is in working order, I'd go for it - you'll never find a house that ticks all the boxes (unless you build it yourself :D ) so if this one feels right in most aspects, especially that all-important one, price, bespeak it quickly before someone snaps it up or you'll spend a lot of time regretting it. (I speak from experience.) You can do the odd jobs as and when you feel like it/can afford it - a house is like the Forth Bridge, fast as you think it's all done, you have to start on something else, it will never be absolutely perfect. And when you find a reliable handyman, hang on to him, feed him coffee regularly, slip a choccy biccy by the mug, tell him he's wonderful, you don't know how you would manage without him - you know the script!

Ya know what annoys me? My favorite house from yesterday was very clean and very cutely decorated (that's not the annoying part). The current owner is one of those "craftsy" people and she's got all these neat ideas littered about the house. The CO took an old sewing machine stand and put a glass top on it and viola a cute table. But you would want the house to reflect you and your tastes, not those of the previous owner. You would come up with ideas for your home that would seem innovative to anyone visiting you and have them going away thinking 'I wish I could make a home like papayahed'!

If I do decide to buy this house there is no way I could make it as cute as it is now (that's the annoying part)...

My parents did the same thing. They found at a yard sale an old sewing machine stand made out of wrought iron and they put a marble top on top of it and now it sits in their downstairs bathroom as a table with little knick knacks on it.

On a second look it does show an opening mechanism. I am not 100% confident about joinery (I am really more structurally inclined, if memory serves Virg is the mechanical engineer round here) with moving parts everything needs to be precise otherwise it just sticks & that would annoy me. It would be a nice project, but I am not sure yet whether I have the tools or patience to attempt it

All you need is a swinging mechanism...

(HaHa sounds like my work. We're having a problem with truck drivers driving off with our ramps still attached to their truck. I've come up with the idea of a swing arm on the platform. only problem is they tell me it would be hard to engineer. I tell them that I did the hard part by coming up with the idea now it's they're turn to make it:idea: :( )

So apparently I have very little taste. All the plants and trees that I think are pretty are turning out to be weeds. All along the road around here are these pretty yellow flowers that look like daisies, I really dig them turns out they are considered weeds. Today I went out to an excavation site and remarked that a certain tree was pretty. Again - the tree is considered a nuisance and people pay money to get rid of them.:bawling:

But arent wildflowers also conidered weeds? in fact arent weeds simply plants that turn up even if they werent planted? SO maybe we should admire them...plus your tastes mean your garden will be airly easy to tend paya.....a bit like ours which is over rn with daisys and dandelions mostly because we actually like them. What are the yellow flowers, papaya? They could well be weeds (ie a plant growing in the wrong place) in whatever part of the world you are now but there may well be cultivated versions growing in gardens back home. Similarly with the tree - it may grow to weedlike proportions because of conditions where you are visiting but have to be cossetted elsewhere. I rhapsodised over the zantedeschias ('arum' lilies) growing wild in Western Australia last year - do they grow in my garden? Do they h***! - and was told very brusquely they were noxious weeds and were not permitted in gardens because they 'escape' and cause problems in agriculture. And then I wanted to take photographs of them - that really convinced my cousin's OH that all Brits are loonies.

Nobody but nobody 'borrows' my camera any more - last year I gave my lovely, new, bought-specially-for-the-trip, lightweight, pocket-size digital (you get the idea I was pleased with it?) to a fellow member of the tour to take a picture of me - and she dropped it. Not on purpose, to be sure, but it still bounced and broke - she was mortified and very, very apologetic but it taught me never to hand my camera over to anybody else. Smile sweetly to this arrogant whotsit next time, Papaya, and Just Say No. Let Selective Deafness kick in. :D

I always side with usefulness when I travel. I tend to carry a lot more than I need. I like to have options.

Actually I was thinking of this thread this week. I was traveling this past week, but unfortunately I couldn't hook up to the internet. But then I got a lot of reading done. I'll be travelling, next week!

From Rio to Belo Horizonte (about in the middle of the continent ... a bit to the east, like Rio ... It's a seven-hour trip, by bus, ticket already bought! :D )

There's been a while, since last I travelled.

(Hm ... better say, both towns are in Brasil.)

I'm back from Belo Horizonte, now. (Yesterday morning.) Quite an adventure. ... Well, maybe not that much, but it's good to change view a bit, and, to me, who live in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte is a lovely little town, at least inside its main round avenue.

I had lived there, as a kid, and last time I had been there was back in '96, and I still could not learn to walk around by myself, as I did this time, and it was great, now, because I could simply walk around, be with friends, make new friends.

(I went there because of a girl I met, in msn ...)

About seven hours from Rio to BH, by bus. Nice, very nice trip. 'Spent four days there, one very good sunny day, and another in which, besides a bit rainy, I could see one of my aunts' house in the suburbs, which is now complete. Cosy place, they built to spend their weekends. It's almost done, by now. (Only the furniture missing, which they're taking there next wednesday ...) I could meet friends everyday, and that girl, specially, everyday as well. So, it was a very nice time! :D

I'm not very used to trips, I have to admit. But I'll probably have to go back there, a few times now ... :bawling:

Oh, love, love ...

Agreed, papaya, though they can be a bit tiring if the back is giving you gip - wish now I'd taken one as hand luggage on recent trip (wouldn't like to put one through hold luggage, rather vulnerable to 'inquisitive' handlers?), though needing more capacious hand luggage was the perfect excuse (as if I needed one) to buy this lovely handmade, hand-painted, really strong canvas bag.....

I'm Home!!!! Ahhhh the sweet sweet smell of Detroit.

As I was driving in from the airport one of my friends called to say her father passed away. He had cancer. I met my friend in High School and have known her father for about that long. In high school he was known as the unfair dad with the accent that watched soccer on french TV, but at some point through the years he turned into a really cool guy. It was fun to see the strict guy turn into a giant marshmallow when his first grandaugther was born.

RIP Louie.

That's a sad homecoming, papaya, but I'm sure your friend will take strength from knowing that you too have fond memories of her beloved dad - I did and still do when my friends and cousins smile broadly and say, 'Oh, I liked your dad, you could talk to him.' I think his secret in being the favourite uncle/extra dad was that he treated everyone as if they were people (not nuisances of little kids) and took time to listen, treated your problems seriously and laughed with you at the things you found funny. It's good to remember people like that.

Papayahed, sorry to read about Louie. :(

So my hubby got back from London without his baggage. They 'lost' it. This was why he was in a state of states this Saturday past.

HOWEVER: the bag was delivered by a taxi from the airport today to our home. So All's Well That Ends Well ...

To double his joy (he doesn't know that the bag is back here safe and sound), I am making him a London Favorite (well, for him anyhow) -- Bangers and Mash. Wish me luck! ;)

Sorry to hear the back is still troubling you, Virgil. I've never used a garment bag - they always look so hard to carry. I can't carry much, bags unbalance me, so I usually try to cram everything into a wheelie bag. It's my ambition to go away with just one carry-on bag, like the guy on the OneBag website - unfortuately I seem to need more clothes than he does: must be a woman thing. But I did set off this year with one medium-size case (on wheels) and one medium-size shoulder strap bag - trouble is, I can't resist shopping while I'm on these once-in-a-lifetime trips....

Could you persuade someone to treat you to a massage of some kind for Christmas? Professional (no, not that sort :D ) or home, doesn't matter - might do you a power of good. I had one in China that I thought was going to kill me but at the end I felt ten years younger - wonderful!

No, a friend of mine at work actually flew into the wrong city. His business trip was to Richland, Washington, and he was to fly into Tricity Airport, and the tri cities are made up of Richland, Kinnewick, and Pasco, but for some reason he thought Spokane was part of Tri Cities. So he made his itinerary for Spokane and when he goes to the rental car in Spokane and asks for directions to Richland and told him it was 200 miles south (or something like that) he was shocked and then they told him where he was supposed to fly into, he broke down laughing. He had a long trip back and forth to the airport. That must of have been 18 years ago and he's never lived it down since.

Papaya, I've had terrible, terrible road trip experiences. Many of my friends are extremely hyper, and a few are diagnosed ADD or ADHD. Well, we once decided to drive from Montreal to Sudbury with my buddy Colt, who is an extreme case of ADHD.

From 555 bottles of beer on the wall to negative 398. He didn't stop singing the song from the moment he got in the car until the car stopped, and he had opened the door and gotten out.

Road trip food: Ringolos, other chips, home made cookies, loads of sandwiches in an ice box, bottled water, Iced tea, NEVER pop (warm pop is the WORST, especially root-beer, which starts to taste like socks when it gets warm...), and Tim Horton's... always.

Also, I ask security and attendants about 80 0000243743287342783427832478324 times if I'm at the right place... and show up ridiculously early to make sure. Apparently the jackrabbits that run the airport don't turn on the air conditioning until 6:00 am. I would guess normally this wouldn't be an issue if the night time temperature dipped below 90F!!! It was incredible I was actually sweating, the counter people were giving out the name of the person to complain to every chance they got.

My airport stinks. I arrived at the airport at 5:15 am for my 6:00 am flight. When I walked in it seemed a little warm but I assummed it was just me but the further I got the hotter I got.

I hate that!!!

thats rediculous!
try working in those conditions. They've had the heating on a few times in Dublin airport this summer instead of the aircon and its been awful.

My trip is just about over, it's time to go back to the sweltering heat of Louisiana. So far I think I've eaten everything in the state of Michigan, I've been to every mall, and have tried on every color lip gloss ever made. Who says you can't go home again?

And how about that Kid Rock? Love him or hate him he puts on one damn good concert. He puts on the type of concert that makes me want to become a musician or do something in the music industry. I think i'll first have to learn an instrument.. hmm.. I think I say that after most concerts.... I'll have to think about this. Does anyone else feel like that after a show? It might be time for another poll. Which reminds me I need to figure out where I left off with those candy polls. Am I sounding like Nightie right now?

Don't you hate when you forget something basic, then you have to think do I need to go buy more of this? or can I get by since I have plenty at home???

Depends what it is, papaya - my mum forgot to pack pants for me one time, left them all in the airing cupboard; my grandmother couldn't stop laughing and made her go straight to the Co-op first thing next morning.

Has anybody seen the new anti-smoking commercial? I think it's a national commercial. The one that starts of with the kids saying smoking didn't kill his Mom and it cuts to his mom who has the hole in her throat, then it cuts to others with similar disfigurments and ailments cause by smoking.:eek::sick::sick:

It makes me want to quit smoking and I don't even smoke!!!

I think this one even beats the Sarah Mchlachlin ASPCA commercial with the abused animals. Both are quickly turned off.

Traveling stinks. It's being somewhere that is the fun. Let me qualify that: Air traveling stinks.

Traveling stinks. It's being somewhere that is the fun. Let me qualify that: Air traveling stinks.I love air-travel - even more so if I'm alone. Excellent time to munch (tend to put diets away while travelling) and read/listen to music.

I am not so keen on road journeys, though. Reading becomes troublesome then... And one needs to be lucky enough to have good company.

While I don't love air travel, I love airports... something exciting and strange about being in that 'in between' space, people coming and going, their excitement is contagious. I love Gatwick airport. I can buy panties at La Senza, then eat Krispy Kreme donuts, then buy some books. =D.

Roadtrips... ehhh... as you said, good company is a must, must, must. Even then, sitting for so long starts to hurt my butt. It's only fun if you stop at a tonne of awesome places along the way- and CAMP, not hotel! And good snacks. Good snacks and music make the roadtrip.

:(

I used to be terrified of going on planes, but this summer when I went to the Virgin Islands, . . . .I actually enjoyed the ride , even though I got quite sick before and after. But now look back on it, that was enjoyable too :alien:

I looooove traveling. By any means, anywhere, anytime. Give me a car and I'll go somewhere. Want me to come along on a trip, I will go. I just looove the road at night. The most elusive thing in the world.

Having said that, couple of times I went on long drives on my own and it wasn't too bad either... However, I did start talking to myself (more often than usual), commenting on the songs, other drivers or the scenery.

I think I just turn chatty when I am in a car. :p

Have I mentioned how much I love hotel rooms? erm, the clean nice hotel rooms that is. I just wish I hadn't forgotten my power cord.

Update: I found my power cord, it was in one of my 47 bags.

New rant: Why do I have so many bags? Is there some support group for chronic over packers?

It's better then being a chronic under-packer. I usually just bring a backpack, which is usually missing most of the things that I need. I just hate packing. I figure if I need something that bad I'll find it somehow. It's inconvenient.

Look on this site, papaya: www.OneBag.com This man (and I do stress, it is written by a man) maintains you can travel anywhere, for any length of time, with the contents of one carry-on bag....(Written before recent restrictions on size and contents, I suspect)

Actually, I do try and follow his advice, though I can't do the all-in-one bundle packing. My friends laugh because I 'travel in blue' - I have an over-seas, hot weather wardrobe devised around navy, mid-blue and white and usually manage my trips involving flights with one medium-sized suitcase and one carry-on bag. But - going to visit friends/family by car, that's a different story: I can fill a boot with wellies in case it rains, macs (ditto), bags of home-grown fruit, books to be returned, books to lend, magazines saved for them, wine, local cheeses, some of that lovely bacon from the man in the market, etc, etc....

I don't know how they do it. I went on a weeks vacation with a friend he had one carry on duffel bag and I had one stuffed suit case and one carry on.

Start travelling on cheap European airlines. They are so fussy and have such low baggage allowance (if you don't want to spend a fortune, by which you could afford a proper airlines, which I'd do if they did the route I want...) that you learn never to exceed your 15 kg, and only ONE item of hand luggage which HAS TO include your purse AND your laptop.

I'm getting annoyed just talking about it :flare:

And underpacking is so much better. Whatever you don't have, you either don't really need or can buy, but most likely you don't need it. While when you have too much you don't need all of it and wonder why did you drag all that stuff all around when you could have done without it.

I used to be a very limited packer. The first time I went to Russia I set off with 13 kg for a whole month. That sounds ridiculous but thinking about it I do remember washing my clothes pretty often. Once I went on a 5-day trip and realised that in an attempt of not bringing too much, I only had 4 t-shirts. Thankfully I didn't sweat much... :D

Now I bring the world with me, and regret it especially when I go back home from the UK, I bring everything I can (I left very few clothes there) even if I know my mum can lend me what I don't have, and the washing gets done more often as it's done for a family of four (four includes me) and not for just one person, so whatever I use comes back to me quickly (yes Italian mums wash for their kids :P). And I don't need to bring towels, slippers and all... and yet there's always a few items of clothing I end up not using. (it's also hard to pack with such different climates in summer, I go back there and think why the hell I brought a cardigan and socks and jeans???). Last year I went to Italy in April and it was so warm I got overexcited it was going to be a warm summer, and I brought to the UK an insane amount of summer clothes, which were needed for...two whole weeks. Much better than usual but still, I dragged all that stuff on planes and buses to wear each item it once if ever...
