I will lie in the grass and count the stars in the summer sky.
I will smell the rich earth and juniper bushes.
I will drink in all that is fine.

Time will stretch as the days grow longer,
And life will slow as the temperatures rise.
Southern summer, Indian summer, Dog Days

There was a tree in the northwest corner.
A mimosa with seed blossoms as pink as the house.
That sweet smell still lingers.

My youth stretched long on its low trunk,
And hung up side down where it was high
I was free and didn’t know it.

The lightening bugs danced like fairies in the bushes,
or earthbound stars on the yard.
I always let them go.

When the sun peeked over the mountain
I would rise, and I will again-
With dew on my face and grass in my hair.

How lovely!!!!

I remember lightening bugs as a child, and there was also a mimosa tree on our property, also in the northwest corner!!

Nice poem motherhubbard. This line really struck me:

I was free and didn’t know it.

I wonder if that is always true, are you free now and don't know it? Interesting. I like poems which make me think, something beyond the imagery, and this one certainly did.

Oh, how easy and beautiful this is! Do please consider changing

I will lie in the grass and count the stars in the summer sky.

These lines are ESPECIALLY fine:

My youth stretched long on its low trunk,
And hung up side down where it was high

All in all, though, it's the laid-back spontaneity of it that is so marvellous. Thanks.

It is an interesting paradox, isn't it, that one is only truly free when one isn't aware of being free? Otherwise, when you say to yourself, I am free! it is as if you are acting on some ideological imperative.

Thanks Jerry- I made the change. Fifth, I had not considered that but I'm sure I'll spend at least the rest of the day pondering

MH, this was so lovely and well written. It rolls along like a mountain stream beside that grass. One of your best ever I think. And the ending tied it so perfectly together.

This is one of those poems that your eyes read while your mind is elsewhere, inside of the poem itself and you just have to let the words lead you. Nice. :) I can't wait for summer.

This is so nice, MH. Reminds me of when you were running around in the yard, dancing, catching lightening bugs, watching Lindsey on Mrs. Ledbetters lawn.... Really beautifully written.

Excellent Mom-H! I really liked this stanza:

There was a tree in the northwest corner.
A mimosa with seed blossoms as pink as the house.
That sweet smell still lingers.

Thanks mom. I had forgotten about Lindsey, but now that I remember I'll have to spend just a few moments thinking on that :brow: Wow! every man should have such a backside.

Thank you Virgil. You're very nice. I hadn't posted anything in months so I thought I'd put this up. It's hard for me to get the nerve sometimes when there are so many talented people here. I appreciate the encouragement, but I would still stick around even if someone told me to get a life.

Ah, I remember that mimosa tree, now I see this again I am somewhat amazed. . mimosas will always be so awesome to me, one of my favorites, because of that. .

I just now caught a hint of games we would play in it, my brother and I.. .

and they are so fragrant, and the easiest to climb.

When I saw this again, the lines of a song camed to mind. . "Summer arrives, with a langful light.
Summer blows away,
And quietly gets swallowed by a wave."
