Okay, all these questions are related to U.S. History stuff:

1. Briefly describe the spark that set the whole thing off.
Well, I know that Americans wanted to stay neutral, and Germans were using U-Boats to destroy and stuff. I don't really know what the question is really asking about, though.
2. Describe America in 1914.
America was doing okay in 1914. They knew that some countries wanted to fight in war, but President Wilson tells Americans to stay neutral. Is this answer right?
What empires collapsed and what was the result?
...?
Describe in general the conditions and treatment of German American citizens during the war.
German Americans in America got fired from jobs, some of them had to change their names, people in America got rid of German related stuff, such as German literature, etc.
Why did hopes for a short war end?
Germans had the U-Boats, and it kept trying to attack countries, trying to overtake the world.

I want to know if I did right on these questions. Can anyone help me on this?

Thanks,

J.

I mean, yeah, you have the "gist" of the questions, but wasn't WWI a result of imperialism at its peak? (we are talking about this in World History right now, actually). So if Germany was attempting to "colonize" and "spread its superior ways", wouldn't any hopes for a "short war" be false hope? Can't tell you much about America's spark to be active in the war.

I don't know what imperialism means. Also, I thought my U.S. History teacher told me that Americans thought the war was going to be short, but it was Germans that made it longer, right?

Well, the reason I'm asking is that I need to know how to answer all 4 question given above.

Five, not four questions. Sorry about that.

Well America became involved after the use of unrestricted submarine warfare by the Germans.

However,if the question is geared toward the war as a whole you'd have to learn about the multitude of alliances that occured dating back to the 1870s,as well as the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

The empire that collapsed was the Austria-Hungarian that dated back to the Habsburgs.

I don't know what imperialism means.

Just one quick thing: Imperialism is the conquest for other territories to increase industrialization/capitalism for the "mother nation" and also was seen as imposing modern technology and ideas to "savage" countries. (major cause of Germany's want for land).

Sorry man, other than that, I can't help you... I could check my book though. Be right back.

1)Do you want for the war in general or for the US to get involved?

2) America was in the top 5 countries economically in the world, if memory serves at the times of war breaking out Germany was #1. America gained dominance due to staying out of the war for such a long period of time and its economy progressed while those of Europe declined due to spending on the war effort.

3) The Austro-Hungarian empire collapsed totally along with the Ottoman empire to all extent and purposes. The British empire was never really the same afterwards either.

4) My studies never included domestic US social influences so cant provide knowledgable answer.

5) Lots of reasons, here's a few briefly:

- Kaiser Wilhelm's interference with the Shlieffen plan
- Due to technological advances in warfare (dreadnoughts, Machine guns etc) the number of actual soldiers made little difference. Instead a stalemate was created resulting in trench warfare.
- Russia pulling out of the war post communist revolution meant Germany only had one front to fight on, meaning all resources could be moved to one area. IMO if Russia had stayed in the war it may have finished earlier as the Germans would have been forced to split their supplies and manpower.

One more question is: Briefly describe the spark that set the whole thing off. I want the answer in war in general. I know that German was one of the countries that kinda started it, but I don't know. Can anyone help?

The spark was the assasination of Archduke Ferdinand. The reasons this one assasination set of a world war are many and varied.
