Nine winters passed
each more frigid than the next
woody pines bent low
ice scattered branches
stolen seed, frozen life
not a single breath.
Blue clouds break
gray moments kiss
melting snows to crystal drip
swelling slowly
warming bosom giving way
waters surge across the plain.
Rivulets push south
carrying the dark soil
far from fertile fields into the sea.
salt shreds her richness like the sand
once the food of kings
now his savor.
Knurled beneath the sun
soil sticky with clay
his hands calloused around the plow
mould board pulls against the chain
furrowed promise,brutal land.
