Time Will Tell

As I look across the miles,
Something deep inside me smiles,
Knowing that I never can
Touch the face of this dear man,
Why the fates, our paths made cross,
Knowing soon I'd feel his loss,
Only time will tell the tale:
Will I win, or will I fail?

Rhyming couplets are trickier than they might seem, in that most of the rhymes are already familiar to one and somewhat predictable and then they lead one occasionally into this sort of manipulation of the syntax:




Why the fates, our paths did cross,


which is at variance with the more spontaneous sounding conversational tone you employ elsewhere.

I thought it was beautiful. I have been trying to sum up some feelings that I have been having and this does it well without saying too much!
