Firstly, I would like to say THANK YOU to those who recommend me this book, I really enjoyed.
So, do you think Ahmed made a mistake, or do you approve his actions against kadija after his brother died? After all, acting against humans, with good reason or without is against his teachings.
What do you think about pasvandžija( ooo, how I like that word :D )? What is his role? To enlighten Ahmed in his bad moments, or to show things from other, more objective perspective?
Please, add more questions :) !

Okay, since I doubt many have read this,I'll be happy to share my opinions with you.
Firstly, did you know that the book was originally meant to be named "Golden Birds"(Zlatne ptice)?Remember that part where Ahmed remembers Mula Jusuf's history? He then talks about the search of a golden bird, which represents the elusive happiness.(Grdna li si varka, zlatna ptico!)
As for the pasvandžija, well,I think his role was to enlighten Ahmed(and us,the readers) on the real state of things - that what we see in the daylight is just an illusion under which a decaying reality lies.(again, communism springs to mind)
Did you notice how this novel is quite similar to Crime and Punishment in the way that the main protagonists are two completely different persons at the beginning and in the end of the novel?Raskolnikov is burdened with the übermensch ideas the first half of the book with the last three chapters of C&P representing atonement, and it's quite the opposite in The Death and the Dervish - he literally lives by the book(Qur'an in this case) until he gets hold of power(or,until he succumbs to one of the worst urges - vengeance),at which point his downfall starts.
I have a lot more to say about this, but I'm in a bit of a hurry:)

It's a story about Muslim priest whose brother was killed in some strange process and impacts on his soul and his desire to revenge his brother. My fellow engineer , you'll like this, believe me! :D
Yes, johan; take your time...That C&P similarity never crossed my mind. Well, it looks like Selimović learned from the best! :)

Thanks :)
I like books that deal with the concept of "revenge" ;)

Well, it could be better. Stupid professor, who is not a teacher any more, gave us question that is not part of subject any more!?! Of course, we all failed...
I was so angry,( John wouldn't help him too much ), and there is nothing you can do so I have to wait June for another shot...

Our professors did that all the time..they used to say that since you want to be a civil engineer you must consider everything as part of the subject matter
even the things they haven't actually tought  That's why i ended up really hating some of them  Especially the ones who taught "reinforced concrete" lessons.
I still have nightmares about two specific professors
