Earthquake Felt Across Parts of England
MANCHESTER, England (AP) - An earthquake struck Britain early Wednesday and was felt across large parts of the country. No injuries or damage were immediately reported.
The 4.7-magnitude quake struck at about 1 a.m. and was centered about 125 miles north of London, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
"It was like a huge freight train outside the front door," Sky News reporter Lukwesa Burak reported from Leicestershire in central England. "The entire house seemed to shake."
Many other people in southern, central and northern England reported feeling their homes shaken by the earthquake in a country where such tremors are uncommon.
I bet it's because Sleepy was in the country. :p ;)

I did not feel them in England.. I felt about 4 of 6/7 earthquakes that happened in Lebanon in less than a week. That was kinda funny to me, I laughed each time I felt one - especially those of the night.

Yes, sadly I was still awake and I might have been surfing Lit-net when it happened. My first thought was 'cor, my hubby really shakes the house when he turns over in bed' but then the shaking went on

they are saying there was two. The first was 4.7 and its epicentre was in Lincolnshire and the second one was 5.2 and its epicentre was around manchester. I'm amazed we didnt feel some of the shock here. I mean, we aret that far from britain, and the land range it covered during the first one would have definitely ment the second should have been felt but there has been no mention.
You gotta feel kind of sorry for Britain these days. Crazy floods, tornados and now really bad earthquakes.

Sorry ?- don't be silly - we handled the Blitz - floods and tornados are nothing! :D
If worse comes to worse - we can always swim to Ireland? :D

Oh no! Not another British invasion! :eek2::lol:
BTW Ireland is probably not the best option! Aparantly St Patrick prayed that if the world was to End that God would Take Ireland first and put her below the sea...

 How could you sleep right through it? The second ones (5.2) epicentre was around Manchester! You would have felt it more than most of the country!
Maybe you toss in your sleep so when everything was shaking, it didnt make a difference because you were moving anyway!:p

One of my grandmothers brothers slept through the Fairview bombings durning the WW2 (when the germans accidentally bombed Dublin). The bombs went off around the corner from their home and he heard nothing!:p

Hmmm...we've been having many here as well, especially the last two months. Today we had a 5 magnitude..Last week a 4 point something, two weeks ago 6.7 ! ;)
You know that it is better this way ;) having many small ones i mean ;)

I've only ever felt one earthquake.
I was in Grand Caneria, and i was lying awake one morning when everything started to shake slightly and then a few of the glasses that were left on the table out side shook themselves off the table and smashed.

Heh lucky you. But after a while you get used to earthquakes. Now when i feel an earthquake i don't even get out of my bed ;)
During my lifetime we had two huge earthquakes, but still nothing compared to the 53' earthquake. My mom was only 3 years old but still remembers. The epicentre was the island of Kefalonia (in the ionian sea) and the entire island (i mean the buildings) were destroyed ;) . hoppefully it took place during the morning and most people were outdoors so there were very few victims ;)

Becca don't worry, the weather, on the whole, is fairly stable (rain, rain, clouds, rain, more clouds...you get the picture) and it's pretty much the only thing us Brits talk about on a regular basis.

That's true. Complaining is the best thing we do; we complain when it rains, when it's cold, when it's hot, when it's icey... It never stops  We'd probablly complain that there was nothing to complain about.

The only big one I've been in was in...hmm...memory gap...1999? Anyway, in Athens, 5.7, on the 5th floor. I think I screamed when my bookcase collapsed! But yeah, after that one, I got used to the smaller ones.

Yep that one and the other at Aegio (which was a few years before). Don't you remember, when Ricomex collapsed and there were many people dead?

There was one in glasgow around 30yrs ago, small, pretty much insignificant. got a hurricane once in the 70's as well apparently. These things just happen once in a while.

bah, nonsense, it does not rain in England ever. there's a lot of drizzle, but you don't get proper rain very often, maybe 2 or 3 times a year.

he he he, tell that to the flood victims over the past 2-3 years! Where were you thinking of moving to when you move to UK? Wasn't it Shrewsbury...ooh, right in a high flood risk area : http://maps.environment-agency.gov.uk/wiyby/wiybyController?topic=floodmap&ep=map&lang=_e&x=349040.0&y=312550.0&scale=5&layerGroups=1,&layerGroupToQuery=1&location=Shrewsbury,%20Shropshire
oh well, I guess you'll find out how much it rains when you get here ;)

maybe the year I lived in Cov was the only year it didn't rain properly :) it must have been because of my sunny attitude :D or maybe I scared the rain away :p

Perhaps you should move here. Since you've been gone we've had earthquakes and gales (last night I thought the roof was going to come off!). Floods will come around June/July just in time for summer...oh, I forgot we don't have summer just rain, clouds, rain, wind 24/7 ;)

what do you need summer for? English ppl walk around half naked in winter :D what would they do in summer? :)
but you have "the hottest summer in 100 years" every year :) I love that :)

For Sleepy.
This tree shows the flood levels in worcester from last summer. The lower sign is june and the other one is july. I took this photo when i was there in october.

I took the above photo from around where those two people are standing in the bottom pic and the tree that is marking the flood levels is higher still, up on the grass bank above the river path.
