Hi everyone i have just joined looking for your expert help and advice!! I am a huge fan of jane austen and am writing my thesis on pride and prejudice!! My question is: Role models for the 21st centuary? A study of Elizabeth Bennet as a heroine for modern day readers. Therefore i need your help as to where to begin??

Is she a heroine? What is a heroine? Why do we like her? What are her roles in pride and prejudice sister/friend/sanity for mr austen/wife to mr darcy? Does she play an influence on who we are and who we would like to be?

I would be grateful for any help, it is a huge area to cover!!

Thankyou all for your time

What is a heroine? - You can look that up in the dictionary, but I would think it is someone you can look up to as a good role model.

Is she a heroine? - Nobody's perfect, but there are things about her we can respect and admire.

Why do we like her? - Why do YOU like her?

What are her roles in pride and prejudice sister/friend/sanity for mr austen/wife to mr darcy?

Does she play an influence on who we are and who we would like to be? - Only if we look up to her and want to be like her.

It's hard to believe someone writing a THESIS is asking such basic questions. What grade level is this "thesis" for?

Personally, before I spend an hour of my time writing a response, I'd like to see you spend an hour of your time asking more pointed questions. They are just too general.

How many times have you read the book, and when is your assignment due?

In reponse to your post science fan i am an avid fan of jane austen and have read the book several times, study guides, research and seen all adaptations. I take my degree extremely serious! I have the answers to my questions but not sure how to begin. Therefore i was trying to gage the reaction of the forum and see what their point of view is to my "basic" questions to give another perspective and side to the thesis!!! I believe lizzy is a unique individual with strong feminist views for her time, she is a heroine to those who you rightly say look up to her but i think she can also be a heorine to those who don't. I think lizzy is a multi faceted character but not perfect as she is human and we all make mistakes to which we learn. However this is escaping the point of the original post to gage your reaction.

Your feedback was a great introduction to the forum thankyou!!

Your feedback was a great introduction to the forum thankyou!!I'm sure you will find other people who agree with you about Miss Austen's feminism, since that appears to be the going view right now, but I am not one of those people.

I choose to differ with you that a feminist is a role model at all, since I am old enough to remember what life was like in America before feminism reared its ugly head.

Good luck.

Sciencefan you seem to have misunderstood my reply. I do not imply a feminist should be a role model, i do however believe jane austen shows evidence of slight actions through her writing and life to which we now label as feminist views after all for a woman to denounce marriage for her own morals and beliefs "only the deepest love shall induce me into matrimony" is to go against the tradition of that day, that woman relied on husband and family, (elizabeth bennet). For Jane Austen herself to be able to support her family with her writing career and save them after Mr Austen died, is an act of equality and therfore feminism as i understand it but i am not old enough to remember feminism nor should i wish to be.

Thankyou nethertheless for your feedback

Sorry but to view Elizabeth Bennet as a feminist is not right in my opinion. She is just an independant, strong minded person, like many modern women are today. (this does not make her a feminist) and the reason why she is like this is because she had a father who allowed her to think, let her come to her own conclusions, judgements and opinions and accepted her advice (sometimess...). Also the society around her in her little community accepted her this way, not to mention they seemed to respect her as well. For a young woman of little consequence to be givin such freedom of character, can create a very varying character; one that may also be susceptable to pride, and in the case of Mr Darcy at first, Prejudice towards people of higher social standards that have better opinions of themselves.
