What are your favorite scenes from the Lord of the Rings books and the movies? I really love the scene from the Return of the King,(movie) when Frodo is so worn out from the journey to Mount Mordor, that he doesn't know if he'll make it all the way, and Sam;) comes to the rescue by carry him on his back, in order to lessen Frodo's load. I also love the scene (return of king movie) when Sam fights with Shelob the spider. It is such a cool sene! I really love any of the scenes in the movies/books with Ewoyn in them.(She is one of my favorite characters from the movies and the books) Does anyone have a favorite Hobbit that they like? I think I like Sam and Pippin the best, not to exclude Frodo, but Sam and Pippin are such funny characters. They add alot of spark to the films and the books. Which would prefer, to read the books or watch the movies?
The last one. After a 200 page story dragged 3 volumes, I was content with the end, finally closing that boring drawn-out story which lacks in aesthetic reward.

You sound like you didn't enjoy reading the Lord of the Rings very much. Well, that is too bad because I think it is a very exciting and adventerous.

I've read the books three times. One of the challenges is how the story separates once the fellowship breaks up and it bounces around. The story moves forward then it drops back and I always felt that Tolkien could have done a better job of structuring the story to keep the parallel stories together.
I never quite understood the amount of anti-climactic material either. The rages of war scenes of cleaning the shire and the ascension into the Grey Havens seem unnecessary downers after the triumph on Mount Doom.
So having said all of that I enjoy the movies. Peter Jackson edited the movies together better than the books, but his dedication to the details was what made the movies great.
One last thought...I wish Tolkien's editor would have kept the story as one book. Now every fantasy writer has to assemble a saga and is predisposed to a trilogy or an octology. Sheesh, tell the story and be done with it and have an ending. When you sit down to write and you scribble down "Book One of the Monkey People Trilogy" please just stop.
