i feel the change in your breath
i see the shadow cross your brow
i hear the laughter die
i smell the salty tears hidden in the cracks
i touch the cold, hard stillness of your eyes with mine
i don't want your pain
i don't need your pain
i don't deserve your pain
but still it comes
certain as the tides
i feel the change in my breath
i see the shadow cross my brow
i hear my laughter die
i smell the salty tears hidden in the cracks
i touch the cold, hard stillness of my eyes
in the mirror

nothing comes
not even the gentle drip of numbness
but still
i wait
empty as a wide valley, cracked and dry
jealous of the soft, billowing hills
rolling away rich and green
into the horizon
trapped in a dark, musty place
raw, aching
rotting
nothing comes
but still
i hope

somewhere we broke
not in half, but shattered
to the cracks far and in between
i realize now that we were made
only to be broken
and i am fragile without that pain
i need to not think for just one second
because i don't want to miss you right now
not when i am still raw from all the things you said
(and all those that i didn't)
the abyss is sinking deep into our hearts
the memories are beginning to surface
pulling at my heartstrings
that you played so violently, like a guitar
you pluck the chords and they ripple through me
melancholy, mundane, but true
somewhere was a hope, that slipped away
across the moors of time
each let the other die
like a flame so gentle, so insecure
blown resolutely into silence
once we were loud with the laughter of love
but then kisses began to blend into habit
like tired out chores
the line between me, between you, between us
it stabbed at our pride
leaving bitter rust
but somewhere the pain ends, and my tears, they dry
and disappear into the corners of my mouth as it curls into a smile
and god knows i could use it
like rain to the cracked desert
because like a dying plant under the weight of the sun
i haven't seen that in a while

Cool poems caelycate, harrowing and raw. I particularly liked rien which, for some reason, strikes a chord and is perhaps more powerful in its brevity and deceptive simplicity.
By the way welcome to Lit-net :)

Use the shift key when you write the word "I."
