View Full Version : Name my instrument

I bought a sax for christmas. After feeling empty for not playing. It's an alto, and I love it to bits! However, some of my musical friends and I have decided it needs a name, and i can't help but want to name it (I think it might be a her, but lets give the male names a go shall we?) after a character in literature. So, fire away if you have any suggestions.
For example, my friend suggested Bennet, and though i liked it, i fear my saxophone needs a wilder name than that. I'm a big fan of improv, and so my music is very temperamental.
Thanks for your help, you creatures of infinite knowledge!

What about Pnin, since this character of Nabokov's world has - for him un- and for the reader fortunately :D - to deal with a life consisting of improvisation? He's not wild though, and maybe a female name would be more suitable for an alto sax.

I like the sound of Pnin... Any particular pronounciation? I should really get back to reading Nabokov.

Do you like the name Pinocchio? or Pnik or Pnin?

Holy Crud...I just looked at your photos of you and I didn't realise that I was thinking you were just so young and cute, and now this avatar...What a stunning beauty you are. I have a couple of favorite saxophone players. One of them is Sam Butera. He played with Louis Prima. I saw him Live in New Orleans at the House of Blues.... please watch this video and know that the saxist is Sammy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VC-4dF2UFnI

 I would have if it were a male writing the thread. ;) But somehow i associate Chava with lady like behavior so it didn't even cross my mind. I was going to suggest Chava name her sax "Bird" (after the great saxophonist's Charlie Parker, whose nickname was Bird) but now that Scher has dragged this into the gutter I think the connotation of 'Bird" might no longer be appropriate. ;)

If I had an instrument, I'd name it Papa...don't know what I'd name a sax.

I have snowboards I call Bulletproof & "The" Battleship. My harmonicas all get a name too. Yeah, I keep them in a case shaped like a coffin. I call it the dictionary. LOL. Good Luck with the sax, and pardon the innuendo. Pete.

Quite unintentional, really. :)

Meanwhile, thanks for your suggestions guys. I'm still not sure.
My snowboards never got names. I think i'll stop naming all my possesions once I've dubbed the darling sax.

I pronounce it simply Pneen. And yes, reading Nabokov is always enriching. I recommend The Defense (generally I prefer the works he wrote in Russian).

How about Oscar for a name, Chava?

Scher, have you read the book Perfume, or seen the movie. The antihero is born in the gutter and dies in the gutter, but people thought of him as an angel.

Oh hey, thanks for that, Fawkes is ringing nicely with me! Perhaps it shall be so.

I have actually been casually referring to it as Oscar lately, but it has cost me some strange looks! :D
