Song of the Brokenhearted

There’s a dust cloud over my shoulder,
I’m wondering if I should just pull over—
I’ve been on this stretch of highway just too long.
Who knew it was so hard just to exist?
I must have taken the wrong exits—
Everything I do seems to turn out wrong…

But I won’t give up on my dreams just yet—
I’ve passed 40 but not 50, Pet—
And I don’t want to look back with regret—
When my 80’s roll around…
And have to think: how close you almost came
To doing something and achieving fame—
Even as they carve my unsung name
On a stone and lay me in the ground…

Perhaps I ought to keep my eyes,
Not on the rejected, lost to me prize—
But firmly fixed upon the one next to come.
Could I but learn to live with a crushing defeat—
Just turn away with a smile and mean it—
I would be alright and then some!

If I would listen to my own advice—
Think it over, and think more than twice—
I could be happy-go-lucky all the while.
Banish sorrow to cold Nifelheim—
Let time pass like water over the dam—
Leaving no nasty memories to interfere with my smile!
