Anyone ever been there or live there?

I am going to be down in Guatemala (very possibly) for about two weeks this summer and I am a little nervous. I've traveled all over my country but never to a different country.

Been looking into some of those travel guides on the country and all but I figured it might be nice to get some information about Guatemala from fellow litnetters.

So anything you guys care to say about Guatemala would be very helpful.

I've never been there Grace, so I can't offer advise. Are you traveling alone?

Seems that my choice of lifestyle is taking me there no matter what. As an anthropologist I have always wanted to go down there (Yes to study Tikal and the heart of Mayan civilization) and in my walk as a Christian. Turns out I am going to Latin America my first time for the latter of the two.

Virgil I won't be going by myself. A church that knows ours, the pastor and his wife go down every year. I was going to be the only one from my church going, but then my praise team leader decided he would join me - which I admit makes me feel a whole lot better about going. :p I know you wouldn't want me going by myself...I don't want me going by myself!!

Was getting around to answering your PM when I thought I would check up on what's up on the forums re your interests as you had mentioned Guatemala. Don't know much about the country but it sounds like you'll be in safe hands.

That's good. If you feel safe, then have fun.

I havent been too, but the book I m reading now written by a Guatemalan novelist; Miguel Angel Asturias. Sometimes novels give the best info, may be you check one of his. Have a good holiday.

Hey thanks tractatus for the suggestion with the novel. I was looking into some guides on Guatemala and when I decide which one to pick up I will check out Asturias. You are right, how often do we visit Russia, London and such as we read novels?

mtpspur I was wondering what happened to you!

Virgil, safe isn't exactly the word I would use to describe how I feel about it, but it is definitely something my heart is into, so no reason to fear right? Plus, my praise team leader is a pretty intimidating guy for a Christian. He'd let something happen to him first before anything happened to me.

Now the only one to convince is mom. Hope she recognizes I am not asking her if I can go. :(

You know, I was truly hoping to find out if someone around here has been there. Eh that's okay, I still love talking about going.

:) Thanks for all your concern too - makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Glad to know there are others out there who are curious about what is going on in my life.
