Joyce is trying to say that an artist is a different human being from other people. He explains this through Stephen, saying that he's different because he sees life from another perspective (here you can talk about aesthetics). That's why Stephen (and maybe Joyce) doesn't feel comfortable with his family and people around him. So, Joyce says that Stephen have to find his own way in order to be free. And this way must be without the restrictions of family, nation and religion.

If you read the whole book, you'll see that these 3 things affects Stephen and his way of seeing life and art. Art and life are the same things for an artist. So, since some people do not understand that, the artist must be free in some way. Joyce sees (in this book) the nation, religion and family as obstacles for an artist to develop his art. In Chapter 5, Stephen finally realizes of that and decides not to follow them, and be an individual without influences. One of the ways is to leave Ireland, as he finally does it (as Joyce did it).
