Too Big a Price
Sometimes selflessly he gives away,
the one thing of value he has that he should keep;
for in this game that they live and play—
he must depend upon others if he is to eat.
But he could hoard his share close to his breast,
and watch another go the long days without—
and having become a beast like all the rest,
he would spend his days in remorse and doubt.
No, rather he starve and grow lean as long days pass,
his own share given to help another gain the prize—
then spend the days calling himself a lowly ass—
a hypocrite in robes of religious disguise…
