The other day my dad pointed out something that I thought was interesting -- the majority of singers I listen to are women. That got me to thinking about the majority; whether most men listen to men or women and whether most women listen to men or women.
Obviously I am a woman (ok, almost woman) that listens to women. How about you?
P.S. Sorry, I meant to make the poll public. Mods, can you please do that for me? Thanks.

I've noticed that about myself too. But for me it's the opposite. Of course, I am a girl, ha ha, but I listen to mostly male singers. Again it's me and my gravitation towards men. The only female singers I listen are Blondie, (er...Debbie Harry) Celtic Woman, (!!!) and then a few bands with one or two backup singer women in them.
I like guys.

Well, I listen to equal amounts of music from men and women. My favorite bands, though, consist of only male. So I didn't really know how to vote there.... (needs a choice of EQUAL listening time, you know?) :)

I'm a male and I listen primarily to male singers/bands. It's not a concious decision, it's just that they are not many female hard hard/metal musicians. There are some, such as Girlschool, and many symphonic metal singers are female, such as Vibeke Stene and Sharon den Adel, but it's a primarily male oriented genre. Metal doesn't make any attempt to exclude females, they just don't seem drawn to it as much as men.

I never bothered to notice before that whether the singers/bands I mostly listened to were males or females but now thinking of them, it seems by chance as if male singers/bands form the bulk of the music that I listen to. Not that I am gravitationally pulled towards them or anything like that I think.

I listen to mostly male singers/bands. It's not a concsience decision though, If i like something I'll lisen to it. I think it has more to do with the type of genres one listens too.

I listened to primarily male singers/bands until a few years ago. Out of my vast library of music, I had maybe 3 or 4 female lead acts that I really liked but that was about it. Then I starting getting into angry chick rock and now I'd have to say it's pretty even. I love those angry chicks. Of course I don't love only angry chicks but it really did open the door to more female lead bands and artists for me.

I am female and I listen mostly to female singers, with a few notable exceptions - there are some male-only singers or groups that I love too.
I never really did it on purpose, but I think I tend to prefer hearing female voices. The first real artist I can remember liking, at age 5 or something, was Suzanne Vega. And after that it was Mary Chapin Carpenter, probably around age 9 or 10.

I'm a girl, and I listen primarily to male singers. The only female singer I can think of that I really listen to much is Evanescence. And there are a few that I listened to like a year or two ago, but I'm liked Metal134, that's mostly the kind of music I listen to, and there aren't a lot of women in it.
I prefer to listen to instrumental music. ;)
Same here.
However, I'll listen to anything that's not country. :D

I'm, um, eh, well, er, a woman (possibly or for the time) and I listen to both male and female singers equally.
(even country :p)

I love the way you said this! :p So do you have any Hole cd's? I actually like some of their stuff, Courtney has a decent punchy 'angry chick' voice that works, you know?
But keeping with the thread, yeah, I mentioned that I listen to equal guy-girl music (instrumental is good too, particularly people playing JSB, Toccata & Fugue in D minor BWV 565 -- omg!!) :thumbs_up

Yes, apologies to those I forgot! *empty-headed moment*, especially since I listen to a lot of instrumentals as well.

Yes, I agree; Bach is excellent! :D

Hmm, what an interesting question. When it comes to rock, there are so many more male singers that it's hard not to say male, unless you're just focused in on only a few particular female artists. When it comes to jazz, it's the opposite, there are so many more female vocalists. When it comes to classical, I would say it's roughly balanced. I think that reflects my listening patterns, as it pertains to gender.
This does remind me of something the novelist David Lodge said (or had a character say) in one of his novels, that as men grow old, they undoubtedly and predominantly start listening to female vocalists. I don't know if it's true. I'm not quite that old yet, but I haven't noticed any trend. My father, who liked listening to vocal Italian music, almost exclusively listened to male vocalists. No matter how old he got.

The ONLY way that will happen to me is if, by the time I'm 50, there are more hard rock/metal female vocalists. But I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

I know that I listen to men more than women. I can't say that it is something that I have done consciously. I just know that I have always listened to more male singers/bands. This has been since I was a little kid. I will admit to the fact that I find men's voices much more appealing to listen to. It doesn't matter whether that man is singing something that is big band or hard rock. I just prefer the sound of a man's voice more than a woman's.
Now I am not saying that I don't like to listen to any women. Some women have voices that I would say sound very pretty (like Celtic Woman ;) ). I love Ella Fitzgerald and Marin Mazzie (a musical theater star). But I would actually classify them more as women that sing "like men". When I say that, they don't have those aggravating whiny or screechy voices. Men don't do that (at least none that I know of). That is why I know if someone saw the size of my record collection, and really studied it, they'd see that the majority of it consists of male artists. I just prefer the tone of a man's voice.

I am a woman and I listen to primarily men (Josh Groban, Il Divo, Joshua Payne, Jon McLaughlin, Jack Johnson, Michael Buble)... a lot of men whose names start with J! This isn't really a conscious decision.... it is just music that I gravitate towards.

I liked Hole in high school - I would listen to "Live Through This" while doing my morning jog. But in general, most of the stuff I happen to like is not by women.

She most definitely is an angry chick. I have a few songs of theirs but no full albums. I like what I've heard but I have a mental block when it comes to Courtney, I just don't care for her personally so I can't bring myself to fully commit to Hole. :p I have a lot of Garbage, Veruca Salt, Poe, Edna Swap, Magneta Lane and there are several more but those are the ones that come to mind first.

I go for female artists myself. My only stipulation other than that they have to make great music is that they are cute and definitely not angry. :p

Yes, they are, in fact they are in my Angry Chicks playlist along with another fairly new discovery for me, Gram Rabbit. The playlist, however, does not include Garbage. It used to but iTunes played them all the time! Even on shuffle, it was Garbage song after Garbage song so in a moment of frustration, I revoked their angry chick status. :p I may decide to add them back after a short break, when I've calmed down. ;)

Just don't let them get anywhere near you, or it'll be Suzie Q to Siouxie and the Banshees in six seconds flat.

On another note, I have come to LOVE Lucinda Williams. Her father was a poet, her mother a talented pianist, she writes her heart, and sings it bloody.

Wild Gardens:
We're children, we're dancing in gardens
Her heart rests on him with the stillness
Of lights in the night time she's dancing
Waiting for his hearts twin rythym
I'm tired of loving you...
Now darling she can't keep on waiting
Till you give a f*** that she's fading
Her blood it flows softly inside her
Spinning awaiting her lover
So kiss her lips tonight
Please make her feel alive...
Now a man stands with his palms
Offering what she wants
from her true lovers arms
Stranger will you kiss her lips tonight
Please make her feel alive
again, again, again...
There's hair in my palms from patience
I hate you admire my patience
Her heart is conflicting with reason
Her temper is changing the season
So kiss her lips tonight
Please make her come alive....
Now a man stands with his palms
Offering what she wants
from her true lovers arms
Stranger will you kiss her lips tonight
Please make her feel alive
again, again, again...
So you stand there with your palms
Offering what I want
from my true lovers arms
Stranger will you kiss my lips tonight
Please make me feel alive
again, again, again

Men listen to women's voices because it's soothing?
Men don't understand women because their voices are high pitched and melodic and men can't hear clearly those sounds?
I love both voices. Male and Female. A duet is very beautiful.

for punk, rock, etc... I think I mostly listen to bands with male leads... Though there are exceptions.. for Joni Mitchell is amazing, tracy chapman, etc...
but when you go into say celtic/gaelic music, which I also listen to frequently then it is almost entirely female singers.. Loreena Mckennit is amazing...
Same with Medieval type stuff, Abbess Hildegard of Bingen, with say Anonymous Four, just beautiful...
Oh and someone said above guys don't have the whiny voices usually... I suggest you listen to some more "emo" music  ... say Dashboard Confessional... or Taking Back Sunday... if you really want to listen to whiny boys...

And let me say it because nobody else will even though it's true: let's face it, angry chick lyrics normally suck. Don't believe me? I can quote scores of angry chick music that could have as well been written by an 8-year old. Here's a la Garbage, a song ranked "#1" in their repertoire:
I would die for you,
I would die for you,
I've been dying just to feel you by my side,
To know that you're mine.
I will cry for you,
I will cry for you,
I will wash away your pain with all my tears,
And drown your fear.
Ah ah, ah ah ah,
Ah ah, ah ah ah,
Ah ah, ah ah.
I will pray for you,
I will pray for you,
I will sell my soul for something pure and true,
Someone like you.
See your face every place that I walk in,
Hear your voice every time that I'm talking,
You will believe in me,
And I will never be ignored.
I will burn for you,
Feel pain for you,
I would twist the knife and bleed my aching heart,
And tear it apart.
I would lie for you,
Beg and steal for you,
I would crawl on hands and knees until you see,
Your just like me.
Violate all the love that I'm missing,
Throw away all the pain that I'm living,
You will believe in me,
And I can never be ignored...
I would die for you,
I would kill for you,
I will steal for you,
I'd do time for you,
I will await for you,
I'd make room for you,
I'd sail ships for you,
To be close to you,
To be a part of you,
As I believe in you,
I believe in you,
I would die for you...

Oh, and when I listen to the band Hole, the lyrics are not what I really get into, they just have a few really good numbers and Courtney does have a good voice (I had the songs "Awful" and "Heaven Tonight" in my mind when I posted that).
Also, this business of 'angry chicks' -- I think it is just a method of promoting themselves, not all all-girl bands are angry. I like guy bands that are angry, btw (NIN is my favorite). ;)
