I am currently studying 1984 as part of my higher english course, however I am having great difficulty with an essay which I have been set.

I have to identify a theme which I find important and explain why I do. I have chosen the theme of Power/Control by Big Brother but I am having a bit of trouble trying to find suitable quotes. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, are the Party slogans, ("war is peace"; "freedom is slavery"; and "ignorance is strength"), part of the theme of the book to show the power/control of Big Brother?

Hope I'm still in time, this is a week late!

You don't really need quotes, you need themes to follow and the entire book is themed on that purpose.

Telescreens - constant surveillance
Youth/Community/Spy groups - engender a false sense of community while gathering information
Two Minute Hate - to burn up sexual tension
Winston's job - controlling the past by changing records

Just pick up a starting point and charge into it - your choice is a fairly easy one.

Absolutely, and Orwell expands them nicely in Goldstein's book.

Eskeemo,
You want quotes for doublespeak? Get the scripts for George W. Bush's press secretaries' announcements. Doublespeak lives!
