I have always found, that particular songs, remind me of particular times in my life, places, people or certain thoughts/feelings.

-The Eagles: Hotel California.
Reminds me of being in Spain a little before sunset.

-Kings of Leon: Knocked Up
Makes me think of being alone in the world.

-Maroon 5: She will Be Loved
A memory of an old friend & unrequited love.

-Jimmy Eat World: 23
Makes me wonder about the future.

-The Cure: Just Like Heaven
Pure happiness :)

-Nirvana: Smells like teen spirit
Reminds me of having great times with friends

Do you have any songs in particular that spark a thought, a memory, a feeling everytime you listen to them?

hmmmm..... let me think.

when i listen to "Peter Returns" i remember that my innocence is fleeting.

when i listen to "Far away" i want to run up to everyone special and tell them i love them.

when i listen to "Clowns (Can you see me now?)" i think of Final fantasy and want to kick the snot out of my enemies. :D

Scar Tissue - Red Hot Chili Peppers, gives me a feeling of bliss.

No Rain - Blind Melon, also gives me a feeling of bliss.

The albums Disraeli Gears by Cream, and Axis: Bold As Love, by Hendrix, also give me feelings of bliss and love.

I don't have favorite songs, I have favorite albums. I don't think enough people appreciate the art of the full album. To many people believe in the bogus notion that there are only 2 or 3 good songs on most albums. Balony. The album is a craft that should be appreciated more. But I'm getting off the beaten path. Some of my favorite albums.

Black Sabbth - Black Sabbath
Systematic Chaos - Dream Theater
Animals Pink Floyd
Brave New World - Iron Maiden
Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan
Dirt - Alice in Chains
Rust in Peace - Megadeth

I quite agree, but most of your examples are fairly old. I don't think "the art of the full album" is practiced as widely as it once was. That said, I'll do a few of these as well:

Deliverance - Opeth
Scenes from a Memory - Dream Theater
Images and Words - Dream Theater
Deadwing - Porcupine Tree
Master of Puppets - Metallica
Oceanborn - Nightwish
Moving Pictures - Rush

Yes, this song is a pure masterpiece. But I adore everything Tuomas writes, and I believe that "Dark Passion Play" is his best work. This is only my opinion, of course. I've been listening to Nightwish since their first work, for 10 years now, and Tuomas keeps excelling and surpassing himself. The vanities of Fame haven't reached him.

I have 2000 songs on my Itunes, and I consider about 300 of those to be my "favorites"! Gah!

But there is something so wonderfully raw and contextual about American Pie.

Wow, that long? I didn't even know about them til after "Century Child". He definitely does keep writing cooler and cooler stuff, and, having just spent the larger part of the day driving around with DPP playing in the car, I have to say it is actually growing on me a little. It's just a lot more...bouncy, I suppose, than what I've come to expect from them. I like the new woman's voice, though. However, "Oceanborn" remains my favorite, I think.

Walk On The Wild Side by Lou Reed is my favourite song. It's brilliant lyrically and musically and I never get sick of hearing it. It also has huge sentimental value for me, so if I could only choose one song that would be it.

There's nothing better than a favorite album, but you have to admit that there are a lot of albums that are nothing but 3 to 5 radio hits and then a lot of garbage recorded for the sake of filling space. Someone should start a thread on the perfect album because The Wall belongs there.

But, as far as favorite songs go, as of today (and this list is subject to change):

9 Crimes - Damien Rice
Creeping Death - Metallica
Wagon Wheel - Old Crow Medicine Show
Strong Enough - Cheryl Crow
Wide Open Spaces - Dixie Chics
Black - Pearl Jam

Mongoloid by DEVO is my favorite song ever.

Now that we have that out of the way, I like "Hate to Say I Told You" So by the Hives, (my current obsession-that song and that band) "Cyborg Control" by Man or Astroman?, "Havana Affair" by the Ramones, "I Want Your Mother" by Alice Donut, "File Under Defiled" by New Bomb Turks, "Buggie Technica" by Polysics, and "Little Girls" by Oingo Boingo.

Basically.

What About Me by Shannon Noll (okay, I know, I know, he covered it - its not his song), whilst not a favourite of mine, certainly brings back memories. It's like an Australian anthem :D. It's one of the few songs that we sing at my birthday every year, without fail.

I'm Yours by Jason Mraz, we listened to this song at least once a day during the Canberra trip last week, so it kind of became the theme song of the trip :D. It calms me down as soon as I hear it :D

All This Love by The Similou, it reminds me of New Years, and new beginnings, because I listened to it a lot during New Years at the start of this year.

Boten Anna by Basshunters was my friends alarm every morning during the Canberra trip, so it always reminds me of the trip when I hear it.

We Will Rock You by Queen always reminds me of school sports events, when everyone would sing it :D

Better Days by Pete Murray, I listened to his album and especially this song, on my way to the hospital for my knee operations. I also sung it loudly in my head when I had the stitches taken out of my knees. It reminds me of how I can hold on and that things will get better.

Lemon Tree by Fools Garden, always reminds me of long car trips with my mums friend. Also, of being lonely.

Graduation (Friends Forever) by Vitamin C, well, simply reminds me of graduation and also of the ends of things that lead into new things.

All The Same by Sick Puppies also reminds me of New Years... and makes me think about, well, love... and stubborness... and how much the guy I love means to me. (also it makes me think of him because I got him interested in this band :D)

Anywhere But Here by Sick Puppies, this was the song that I had in my head when he told me he was moving... and happened to be the song he was listening to when he told me.

Way I Are by Timbaland, my friend played this constantly during my last birthday, and so it reminds me of that :D

there are so many more.... but... that'll do :D

This is a cool thread! Here are mine...

The Grace of Undomiel by Howard Shore, for the Lord of the Rings. I listen to this song when I want to get in the mood to write. It's such a beautiful song though, if I listen to it too closely I start crying.

Remember Me by Josh Groban, for the Troy soundtrack. This song is my latest craze. A splendid voice singing such heartbreaking words that, to me, are more than a remembrance of Hector and Sparta but for all literature and its worlds as well.

Lux Aeterna, by I forget who, for the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack. This is as angsty and as angry as it gets! :D

O Mio Babbino Caro, by Sissel. Such a beautiful interpretation of a classical piece.

Skiddoo by Mairead Nesbitt. When I want to feel funky and modern, I listen to this piece.

Song of Gondor, Boromir's Lament, Galadriel's Song of Eldamar, Song of Elves Beyond the Sea, and Elven Hymn to Elbereth Gilthoniel, all by the Tolkien Ensemble. Tolkien plus Danish composers add up to more than their sum :D. Absolutely stunning music that reminds me of the place I'd call mine --if it was real!

Skelling, Marco Polo, Caravanserai, and The Highwayman all by Loreena Mckennit. Beautiful music that reminds me of the way that the Orient was supposed to be.

Koul Chi Am Yekhlass, Amm Yess'alouni Aleyk, Ya Beirut, Ohibbuka Jiddan, and Habibi, all by Majida el Roumi, a Lebanese singer whose voice is as stunning and patriotic as she is. In English, the titles are Everything is Ending, They are Asking Me about You, O Beirut, and I Love You So Much.

It's by Clint Mansell (with the Kronos Quartet I think). And guess what!? Our performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream starts with this song!! It plays while Hermia walks over to Lysander, Demetrius reaches out for her but she ignores him, Hermia and Lysander dance, Demetrius pulls her away, then other people (the other actors) come out and dance around like "spirits", then get in a circle around Lysander, he breaks the circle, pulls Hermia away, then the other people get in a circle around Demetrius, until he breaks through the circle, and then the music ends, the other people run off stage, and then, the play begins! :D
