This one for Kilty! :D

Beavers - yes the Animal type! have been extinct for 400 years in Scotland.

Plans are underway to reintroduce this extinct species back to Scottish Countryside.

Question is should we do that?

Should we re-introduce animal species to environments that they have become extinct?

Scotland is extinct?:D

As to the original question....I don't know. One can assume studies have been done, the experts have been consulted...

No beavers have been in scotland for 400 yearsor a certain type of beaver hasn't been in Scotland for 400 years?

I read about this in the paper recently, Lote-Tree. It sounds like a fantastic idea to me.

My wife thinks I'm insane, but if it was up to me I'd re-introduce wild boar, bears and wolfs back into the environment too.

Wolves? Is that not going too far?

They eat people don't they?

Wild Boar is already being reintroduced...

I think its a good idea.

Lote, Wolves only attach humans if they feel like they are a threat to the pack.

^^Wolves will only attack people if they feel threatened. It's extremely rare, and there are actually VERY few documented cases of them eating people, like, 6 cases over a hundred years across the world.

I think it's a fabulous idea, actually. I realize that introducing foriegn species is a bad idea, because the ecosystem can't accomodate them, but I think a species that was naturally there would fare just fine, especially because they went extinct due to overhunting (didn't they?) as opposed to natural reasons.

I heard that too, BeccaT. The stories of wolves attacking humans are hugely exaggerated. These animals were all hunted to extinction by humans. As it is, deer populations have to be artificially controlled in Scotland through culling. Re-introducing preditors such as wolves would control the population naturally.

The only down-side is that there would be a huge objection by farmers who already have a hard time of it without wolves attacking their sheep and cattle. However other countries keep livestock and have wild preditors and somehow seem to manage. Why couldn't we do it too?

^I farm in Ontario, in Canada, and yeah, there are problems with wolves and predators attacking farmstock, but not that frequently. It's manageable, and it's just part of life. You're a pretty lazy farmer if you can't deal with it ;p.

But wolves are pack hunters Becca ;-(

Imagine whole Scottish Countryside is full of wolves...the residents will have to fleee or kill them....and then Animal Rights activists would be up in arms!!!

Hmm I know, yet I've never had them attack livestock.

I don't know.

If things were balanced properly, they would eat the deer and not attack livestock, as it's not a natural preference. I don't know if we can meddle and properly balance the ratio of predator:prey now that it's been destroyed though.

*ponders*

It would definately NOT be a good thing to have the Scottish countryside over run by wolves.

Yes, the cities are dangerous enough without wolves making the countryside uninhabitable too!

We have wolves in Finland and some people want to shoot them all because they're afraid that they will attack people or their animals. Yes, it happens sometimes and in that case the wolves in question may be shot, but it's quite rare and most people think it's good to have some wolves in the nature. I mean, there is plenty of space for wolves and other wild beasts (like bears) in Finland, as this is a sparsely populated country.

I'd say reintroducing them to a territory they once roamed tells me it's a worthy idea. I'm for it.
