Not to spoil the party but I cannot pass without chipping in (please accept my apologies in advance; I do not intend to offend anyone).
To me, hugs are very, very special. They have to come from people I really care and who really care about me... Like a partner, parent, child, sibling or a life-long friend. Or I would offer hugs to people who really matter to me.
Random hugs, even though they might work on some people, will not do it for me. I have to know that it is coming from the heart.

Nope, I got the impression that you might want to join this anti-hugs group where you can kick everybody not your relation/very close friend trying to give you a hug. Yeeees, stupid people trying to be nice. Yeeeees, insincere people faking up sincerity. Ooohoo they deserve a pay-back, in the form of kicks. They try hugging me, means something is wrong. Random hugs, even though they might work on some people, will not do it for me. I have to know that it is coming from the heart.I know what you mean, in Real Life, I am not a 'touchy-feely' type person, so I agree with your sentiment about getting/receiving hugs from those who really matter.
HOWEVER, I think that the very gesture of a hug coming from a cyber friend out there in the form of a cyber hug is really really sweet. Though not many of us have met/will meet, it is really nice to get a 'hug' from one of you guys.
So, keep 'em coming! And hugs to all from my little desk here in the Prairies. :)

I am also in the anti-hug group. Growing up where I did feelings were considered things not be shown outwardly (with the possible exception of anger). As a result I dont do shows of affection etc even on-line. You will just about never see a post from me empathizing with someone's bad luck (on occassion a PM will be sent about it instead). All of this hugging stuff really just isnt me. It would be fake if I were to start doing it.
**This is also the reason I very rarely welcome new folk in the introductions section (though I do read the intro posts) I dont know after their first post whether it is particularly good that they are here - it takes time for me to make that decision**

No, I cant hug. It is part of growing up in a city like glasgow. Women are allowed to be sentimental but the man must be strong, a rock - no matter what his emotions are doing under the surface.
It may seem silly to you but it is reality.

But but Burns! What about Burns!?
Even Burns can't bring out the emotions?
kilted exile
02-05-2008, 01:22 PM
Lote, I may not be making myself clear enough. The emotions are there I just dont show them. Also there is a difference between getting stirred by something and giving someone a hug.
I just dont hug. I can make a cup of tea and sit there whilst the person gets their feelings out, or (as I have had to do on more than one occassion) sit in a bar whilst someone drinks the pain away for a night. That I can do, and because I am not a sociopath I can care about what they are going through, but I can not & will not hug.
Scheherazade
02-05-2008, 01:31 PM
I find it interesting that simply because someone is prefering not to show their feelings/emotions randomly or being particular about the people they share it with, it is assumed that they are incapable of showing compassion. There are different forms of compassion; one does not need to go around delivering hugs and kisses to be caring.
Personally speaking, I do not mind giving or receiving hugs from certain people and am a very affectionate person who doesn't mind getting out of her way to help others.

Big Hug For B-Mental!

02-06-2008, 08:48 AM
I love hugs, but unfortunately I'm suffering from a great huglessness (? In Finnish we have this great word "halipula", but I don't know whether English has something like that or not...) since all my friends live far away and I haven't made any new friends yet that I know well enough to dare to hug them :(
:(!
Then I give you a big hug. I have made a wonderful friend in Finland this year (over MSN) who I talk to constantly now - if all Finnish are like you and her, I'm sure you'll find some new friends soon!
I think hugs from anybody are good. However, I'm having a big problem here that sometimes I get really down from homesickness, friendlessness, inability to talk, cultural differences resulting in fights with my host family, etc.; and I really really want a hug - but nobody really hugs in Italy. There are either the impersonal cheek-kisses, or people writing "TVB" on your stuff (basically meaning "I love you" in a friend sense), but there's not much real feeling behind those. Hugs, to me, always seem to come from the heart. Nobody has hugged me in half a year. I wish, instead of drawing "TVB" in my diary when they're bored in class, my friends or family would give me a hug instead!!

Oh well, I haven't hugged anyone in 7 years. And I don't plan to really. it's just really hard for me to show emotion. I wasn't raised like that.
I can empathize with others well, but....eh, it's easier to wring blood from a stone that for me to actually tell what I am thinking or feeling.
I agree with kilted in some points. (look at quote below). But even though i am technically female, i'm still not allowed to break down, or cry, I have to be the strong one in my family. I'm actually more emotional here on the litnet than on the real world!
