Feed Your Head

Charles! Charles, darling, wake up!
Today is Lewis's birthday and there is much to do.
The queen sends her regrets, praise God,
her evil heart is out for blood anyway.
I'm sure you could teach her a thing or two
but there is no time for equations or theology,
and besides, caterpillar can use the extra chair,
the smoking section, you know.

TIME! Did I say time?
What time is it?
There IS no time
for us to be late for this important date.

Oh, I do hope he won't stammer or be the shy one,
Surely little Alice will lead us through the looking glass,
or was that down a hole? I am puzzled, as always,
but no matter, the hatter is brushing his March hare,
and that cat, that cat keeps popping up in different seats
and the kettle is hot and you must let my sweet boy
sit here beside me, my little storyteller,
feed me and I will give you Grace.

"If you set to work to believe everything, you will tire out the believing-muscles of your mind, and then you'll be so weak you won't be able to believe the simplest true things." Lewis Carroll

Happy 176th birthday!!

It's refreshing to see that you are experimenting with a different speaker for the poem. I do wonder, though if you could clarify a couple of murky spots: first, why is "IS" all caps, when I think the word you want to emphasize is "NOT." Also, capitalizing "Grace" in the last line looks as if what is being offered is -- forgive me -- a young lady. Or is that the intention?

Very intriguing!

Thanks, you three! I absolutely love Alice In Wonderland.

I probably should not have capitalized the 'is' so that people could read it with their own emphasis. I was writing it as rather a one-sided conversation, like a mother scurrying around, talking to herself, and that happened to be my way of saying that line.
Yes, the capitalized Grace was very intentional. I gave the little fellow Grace Slick singing "White Rabbit" as entertainment for his party. I was hoping readers would also watch the video that I included. I know this would not work outside of the internet but I was really only writing it for this place anyway. Does that make any sense? Thanks, Auntie.

Not that one needed or wanted a holiday from your wonderfully serious and passionate poems, but what whacky joy in this! And they said you had no sense of humour!
