with the signatures of various neighbourhood dogs
who are sworn to keep their masters’
and mistresses’ secrets: the unmistakable scent
of Mme. Lafortune’s perfume
on the front of M. Beauchemin’s trousers,
the high ripe smell of freshly killed lamb
on the clothes of M. Thibideault, whose wife
is a militant vegetarian. Each day
they take in at a sniff the raunch,
the rank and the riotous
of As the Neighbourhood Turns...
