Lord of the Flies is a very simple read, but when you are given the task to compare it to other pieces of literature or media, such as E.T. or Freedom Writers, the task becomes much more difficult. Nonetheless, comparisons seems to be the highest level of thinking; however, the steps it takes to achieve a high quality piece with many connections are never-ending.

Thus far, I can think of some brief points which I find to be similar in all 3 contexts. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to support all my statements, but I do know that I can argue and elaborate on them later on.

- In E.T., we can view E.T. as a Christ figure just as some argue that Simon in LOTF can be seen as a Christ figure.
- Both E.T. and Freedom Writers explore topics of redemption, self-worth and determination
- LOTF, E.T., and Freedom Writers all convey message surrounding topics on violence, relationships, and social outcasts. They also hold an underlying connection to the ongoing wars and the impacts they have on our society.
- Survival of the fittest and hope are also themes which are portrayed in all three pieces.

Can you think of any other connections?

Also, are there any famous quotes or quotes by famous people that one can use to relate to LOTF, E.T., and Freedom Writers. For example, Lord Acton expresses that "Absolute power corrupts absolutely". I can thus, in turn, use this quote to relate to the democratic form of gov't in LOTF and how it moves into dictatorship: Jack's power, which eventually ends up creating complete chaos; thus corrupting the island and all who inhabit it (excluding Ralph). We can continue to relate to Jack and Ralph's relationship and the contrasts in their highly distinguished characters, especially after they have emersed into their true characters (after they've changed). We can compare Jack's savage and evil instincts to Ralph's innocence and stand for civilization as Jack's empowering impulses end up corrupting all of civilization and order on the island.
