Well shalot got me thinking about it when she osted a comment on my blog, and I want to actually discuss it and blogs just not big enough...:D

So lactose intolerance or more correctly termed Lactase enzyme defficency.
BTW to al you nonsufferes this is pretty gross and you might want to stay out.
I have type 2 developmental got sick as a baby and ruined the lining of my stomach...it damaged my ability to produce lacatse and thus inability to digest lactose.

...
Actually I have a lot more to say but I have a train to catch in 10 minutes and I am late.

Gripe away people.(* oh a bad joke /pun thinggy and accidental! )

I am sorry Nightshade - your situation sounds much worse than mine. I have never been formally diagnosed with lactose intolerance, but around the age of 19, I began to have terrible symptoms and I after much reading and trying to figure out why I was so sick to my stomach all the time, I stopped drinking milk and discovered that my horrible embarrassing symptoms were related to drinking milk. And I have discovered by accident, that I can deal with yogurt and cheese, but milk and ice cream make me so sick unless I take Lactaid when I drink or eat these items. And powdered milk makes me as sick as regular milk, so hot chocolate in those yummy little packs with the weird little marshmallows are torture unless I have my trusty Lactaid pill.

Anyway, from what I have read, it is somewhat common for people to develop problems with drinking milk around the age I started to have problems. My mom tells me that I had to have soy formulas when I was little too --- I have no idea if that's related at all, but now it's either soy milk or no milk unless I have Lactaid, which is a lactase enzyme pill that helps me digest milk or ice cream.

Lactose Intolerance is lame. And what makes me mad, is the ice cream parties we had at work. It was supposed to be some kind of reward, but I always had to decline and I hated explaining why. Lactose intolerance is supposed to be pretty common, but apparently I was the only one who suffered from it, because some of these people had no idea what I was talking about. And I didn't want to say, "If I eat that, I will need to take the rest of the day off so that I can be at home in the bathroom"

Well Im lucky icecreamdoesnt bother me onebit. And the truth is I probably have it better because asmmum says I have no idea what a 'normal'stomach feels like so I can get on withit.andlikeI said in my blog its alla matter of balance, if I know Im going to be having alot of milk Ibalance it with lots of peanuts or peanut butter or something like that that has the opposite effect.

Also Ive been known to use milk to fluss out stomach bugs, works fasterthan medicine although the process is more painfulImus admit.

Iguessthis is why I lovecheesecakeso much...I have to really plan when I can eat someIcant over indulge its like the best treatin the world... because theoppertuintytohave any os so rare.:D

I'm not lactose intolerent but i am ashmatic and dairy can aggravate it. A few years back, i cut dairy out of my diet completely and i felt amazing. I took to using Soya which i've grown a taste for (but not on its own) but it has to be the sweetened kind with added calcium. Lost weight, wasnt bloated all the time. Was off dairy for around eight months. I've been trying very unsuccessfully to cut dairy out again but because i'm back home i'm finding it very hard. But i must! too many chest infections and i really dont want to have and ashma attack.

Yes, dairy-milk I never could have, was a great problem for my mother when I stopped having it, but then I did eat/drink other milky stuff.

You know what's really weird? I was lactose intolerant for about 3 months when I was about 19. I'm talking anything with any part of the milk that comes from that udder, and I'd be out of commission for a while unless I took a lactaid pill. I was even checking labels for ingredients like whey.

Then....

It went away!

I've never been able to figure that one out!!!

my mother is lactose intolerant also. She now drinks soy chocolate milk and when she buys yogurt she has to make sure it has no fructose.

You know what I was surprised about, is that you can have an actual allergy to lactose and when dairy is ingested, you get allergy symptoms, like a stuffing nose and itchy eyes. When my youngest was born, he had sinus problems immediately and I mean immediately! At first they thought it was because of a blocked nasal passage but then they did their little exam to find how the extent of the blockage and decide from there the treatment but there was no blockage. It was finally decided that it was just a simple lactose allergy. I was nursing at the time so he was reacting to the dairy I was consuming. Once his diet was limited, he was fine and when dairy was reintroduced at the age of one, the allergy was gone. He's 13 now and he continues to eat diary with no problem. Of course, my other son can't tolerate dairy now but that's because of Crohn's disease. He had have some cheeses but milk and ice cream just don't work for him anymore. He misses the ice cream but not the milk, he was never much of a milk drinker.

I actually just saw some at Target the other day. Lactose free and gluten free. I can't imagine it tastes very good but it's an option.

they make it in chocolate and vanilla only. And instead of 6 cans, you get 4 cans for $2 or $3 dollars more. that's so lame. For that reason, I just skip slim fast. It has too much sugar in it anyway, imo. But, at one time, when I wanted to buy it, the stores either didn't carry it or I just couldn't bring myself to pay more for fewer cans.

I am not sure if I am that which is formally referred to as "lactose intolerant" or whether I have got only the minor variation of that; ever since I was a child, I knew that there was something wrong about the dairy products.
Sometimes it was even a priori, I instinctively refused taking some types of food, or tried later and figured I would feel sick or, if not sick, I would just feel weird; so even though I never had any serious complications or reactions, from the age of about 6 I had not taken any kind of cheese, a yoghurt, or a glass of milk and such stuff which are normal for most people. Ever since, I remember emphasising in restaurants not to be put parmigiano to on my pasta, and such.

Usually I had no problems with food which milk was a part of, unless it was, to say so, a 'dominant' note, so with most of the ice-creams I was okay, just as with hot chocolates / cocoa prepared with milk, or even, though rarely, putting a few drops of milk in tea. I still did not consume the dairy products, only milk as a part of something else (i.e. never 'pure' milk) and that is how I have been living for the past... over a decade, I guess.
I never had any serious problems with this "allergy", it was always rather loose, I just knew instinctively what was wrong, and what was okay up to some limit. Strange thing nobody in my family has it - my mother disliked dairy products as a child (but only disliked, as in, without actual physical reaction on them), but re-discovered them as an adult and adores them now. She holds the theory that one day I will be able to consume them too - however, as I have virtually never consumed them, I do not know what am I missing, so there is no desire to consume them anyway. :D

I do not consume a lot of food other people do anyway, this is just one in the row (e.g. I do not eat pizza. Cheese and tomatoes are the reasons; but those same tomatoes are okay if they are in the form of different tomato souce on pasta  And such stuff. But not that I like food much anyway, so nevermind.)

My youngest has this problem. I can give her small amounts of yogurt and cheese (maybe one serving a day), but she can't drink plain milk. I have to buy her the Lactaid milk, is has lactase added to it so she can drink it and still get the other nutrients. She's only 17 months, so she still needs the vitamin D milk to help her grow properly.
