The Maestro’s Send Off
He played the piano in slow melodies,
And the clock on the wall ticked out of time.
Mozart, and Gershwin, Bach, Beethoven as well,
But that irritable timepiece was always out of beat!
He began to play the Moonlight Sonata—
The clock was geared up for Hawaiian Sunrise.
The ivories tickled faster and faster still,
The clockwork yawned and put on its nightcap.
The two could not get together at all—the Steinway Baby Grand Piano,
And the Swiss Made, Diamond Jeweled, Brass Pendulum Grandfather clock!
The snow finally lay upon the pianist noble brow,
And arthritis began to bend the skill from the long slender fingers.
He came home from a concert very weary, sat down and played a funeral march.
And lo, the Grandfather clock kept time all the way to the end, where it bonged three times.
In the morning, the servants found their master sitting dead at his piano.
But his face was turned to the Grandfather clock and he wore a truly heavenly smile and a single tear frozen on his face…
