Sprint

Sharpened air alerts my skin,
sends a message surging
deep within my blood,
of youth, a chemical
event, rampant
adrenalin,
I burn
I rage
explode
onto
the street
passing cars
and trees and homes,
but I don’t care
there’s just this air,
and freedom,
energy,
blood coursing,
heart pumping,
muscle burning,
lungs bursting,
expiring,
nothing else to do but
STOP.

After the terrific, breathless energy built up in the body of the poem, that final STOP made no sense to me. It is as if she had run head-first into a stone wall & lost consciousness.

Perhaps you don't sprint like I do! The end is often more sudden than the beginning, like a firework, there's that sudden burst of energy then BANG it's all over. It is always that way for me when I run.

Rest assured that I don't sprint as you do since my car is rarely more than five to ten meters from my front door! Still, I maintain that one needs to feel whether that STOP signifies exhaustion and defeat, or accomplishment.

It's interesting how what you describe could also apply to love-making.:)
This poem is not my favorite of yours, but the ending aroused my curiosity.

 a very astute observation! And forgive me if I am beginning to get a slightly stained mind here, but with some of your poetry, Fifth, I was wondering myself if this were an actual sprint or one of the mind brought on by the ecstasy of lovemaking...

 whilst it may be uncharacteristically innocent, my intention was definitely that this was an actual sprint, and until Sweets pointed it out I hadn't even thought of the other possibility. Perhaps it is always just one step away, in my mind anyway

Eheh, so I was not the only one thinking this way.:D
Your poem can really be read this different way, that's true. The only lines that would seem strange are

explode
onto
the street
passing cars
and trees and homes
because that would be strange to do that in the middle of the street. But still.:p

This poem is indeed deep and takes us in a world that is really enchanting.
