Hey guys I recently found this website and read 1984. I'm going to sue you guys for glasses. My eyes are killing me from spending all those hours reading Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. A great read indeed despite its blinding tendencies. Well I'm glad to have found this site and I look forward to reading books and talking to everyone.

LCDs are supposedly better than CRTs for eye strain.

LCD? Is it a drug?

And what is CTR?

It is the vacuum tube thingy in your television... or computer monitor.

A typical example of a liquid crystal display is on a calculator. They're also making very expensive computer monitors and televisions etc. with same technology. I don't know why they cause less eyestrain, but they're really cool and I want one!

and what is a cathod ray tube?

Hey, I just read about that in my chemistry textbook: Fast-moving electrons excite the gas in the cathode-ray tube, causing a glow between the electrodes.

CRTs flicker, that image you're seening is really an image that is being flashed repeatedly at a rate of 60 hertz or whatever, you can't consciously see it but your eyes do and that is what causes strain. LCDs do not flicker, the image you see is constant.

They have also seriously come down in price. I've used one since '99, my first one was 15 inches and cost $990. My wife uses that one now (it still works fine 5 years later) and my new one is 18 inches, I think it was $350. You can get 15 inch ones now for around $200 -- and they're sharper and more colorful than the $990 one I bought in '99. Every once in awhile Dell will have a 20% off sale or 20% off coupon, thats when I buy.

one could also change the refresh rate on their monitor to cut down on the flickering.
