You can probably find these answers faster by searching the 1984 threads...Its much faster than waiting for someone to log on, decide to help, respond, and then finally you see that they responded.

I agree you can find a lot of useful informaiton in searching the threads, but even so I will give you my persecptive on your questions.

I think there were several possible reasons for his keeping the diary. For one I think a part of him did it simply becasue he knew that it was something that he should not do, as well it was a way for him to record the thoughts he knew he could never speak aloud. And all through the book we see Winston playing with fire so to speak, almost asking to get caught. It might also have been a means to try and record the truth as he knew it and remebered it so there would be some record other then just what the governement brianwashed people into beliving.

Well as people commonly say, the best way to bring people together was to give them a common enemy, with the Two Minitues hate, it bounded everyone together against the enemies of Big Brother, whom they were reminded were also thier own enemies, and in this way they gave thier support to Big Brother. And hate is an emotion that in someways can be easier to inspire and easier to control then some others. It was done as a sort of propaganda so people would continue to support the war without question.
