How do the characters in this existentialist play contribute to the significance of the play?

I don't know but seeing it with Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder in the film would be good. Ionesco is often a witty and upbeat absurdist. I forget the point as to why the avg. guy turns into a Rhino before your eyes, but it's a genius idea. Thanks for giving me a task to find this out sometime in 2008.
