Well, if this new 2010 Hobbit movie (http://www.us.imdb.com/title/tt0903624/) will be good or better than the 1977 animated movie, it will need to be done by Peter Jackson!

I can't wait :D :)
Hobbit was one of my favourite books as a kid.
If Jackson stays close to the book and respect it (more than he did with LOTR) it would be a nice adaptation.

Honestly, I would've rather it been done by someone other than Jackson. I'm not a huge fan of the decisions he made in his adaption of LOTR and one of the biggest concerns I have is that he's going to make it another LOTR when it's really a much lighter story. There was still danger and adventure but the tone is very different from that of LOTR and it should stay that way. I read they are going to make 2 movies which seems a little excessive to me and they are going to include the events that were going on at Dol Guldur at the time of that story which means he may be making stuff up or at least that the tone will indeed, be much darker than was intended...and that's the end of my complaining.

I would love that! I love that early history of Numenor and the creation of the Gondor and Arnor realms and it would give people a chance to see that Isildur wasn't bad man, he just had a weak moment, he was actually an incredibly valiant and admirable man...up until that moment and I would love if they added a scene about what really happened at Gladden Fields, that Isildur repented of his claiming of the Ring and that he planned on giving the Ring to Elrond...can you tell I'm a little defensive when it comes to Isildur? :p And of course, it wouldn't have to be all about Isildur, there are many fascinating characters to pick from that era and it's much more doable than a film version of The Silmarillion.

Is Jackson filming it for sure? I heard so long ago that he was going to be the one to do it. Do we know this for sure now?

Yes, we do. It was announced a short while back. They weren't able to come to contract terms so it was decided someone else would do it but somehow they were able to come together and he was given the job. Here's (http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2007/12/18/28150-peter-jackson-and-new-line-cinema-join-with-mgm-to-produce-%E2%80%9Cthe-hobbit%E2%80%9D/) and article about it.
   Yay!!!
I would have rather that Jackson direct it, but at least he has a good hand in it. The scene that I want to see left in is when the dwarves invade Bilbo's home, after dinner, they play instruments and sing. Because there is so much of the Beowulf story in The Hobbit, I feel there is so much meaning in when Tolkein has the most important dwarf play the most important instrument. Beowulf was originally sung to a lyre, a form of harp. This singing was used to tell stories of the past which is what the dwarves do when they sing for Bilbo. Besides, it's this singing which stirs the Tookish side of him to want adventrures and see the mountains.
I think Tolkein would be disappointed if they left that scene out as would I.
Better than the animated movie? Never!!! :p
I've been looking forward to this for a long time.

I dont mind that its peter Jackson. (Sorry Idril!) In all fairness, he did do a good job with the movies. Nearly every book made into a movie has things left out or slightly aultered...

Aww, you don't have to apologize. I'll never agree with you but you're allowed an opinion and I'm sure it's very reassuring for you to know I'm big enough to allow you to have one differing from mine. ;) :p
If Peter Jackson does it, hope too that he doesn't leave crucial parts out like he did a bit with LOTR though it wasn't bad, good really. But Hobbit being a shorter book, hope whoever directs it, doesn't feel the need to cut out parts.
