How does the theme, The Need for Literacy, apply towards Animal Farm? Why do the animals need to be good readers or critical thinkers in order to succeed?

Well if all the animals knew how to read they would not have had to rely upon the pigs so much and so they may not have been so easily mislead and could have opposed Napoleon before he got too powerful. Thier own ignorance was used against them, while it was the because of the intelligence of the pigs which allowed them to take over.
