What really happend to Snowball?

Though I do not belive any of the lies/stories Napolean told about Snowball's wherabouts and activities, I could not help but to wonder, what really did happen to Snowball?

Was Snowball ever really hiding somewhere on either the Foxwood and Pitchfeild farm?

Did he just take off to some unkown location and more or less dissapear.

Or was he infact killed, but Napolean, just lead the other animals to belive he was still alive, so he could use Snowball as a way to keep them in fear and intimidated and as part of his stratagy with dealing with the two farms.

Given that Snowball was Trotsky, the obvious inference is that he escaped into exile.

Like Trotsky, he may have been killed later on.
