Banished Words for 2008

Lake Superior State U. has again issued its annual list of
Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness:

My question to all you verbophiles at the LNF: do you agree/disagree with these choices?

Are there other words or phrases you wish that LSSU had
included?

I wish they'd added "like". Some of my students were using in their writing they way they use it in their vernacular. "That's like, so unfair" "I'm like, going to the movies" "I like, need like a pencil" "She was like, mad or something". When I pointed this overuse out to one of my classes, one of my students tried to argue it and got us all laughing to the point that I was nearly in tears because she couldn't complete a sentence without using "like" in that manner!

Heh, the word "like" was often scolded when I went to school too, here in Estonia and teachers used especially extremal examples of some phrases with the word, for example, "He was like dead", "She was like pregnant" and so on.

Hmm, a danish term for 'cool' or 'awesome', is "fedt" translated this means fat... I was asked to represent my study at an introductory seminar, i was talking in english, for the english programme, but the two people before me were saying that everyone should join their section because it was so 'fedt'.

I couldn't help it, at the end of my speech i said it.. "And so i think you should all join the IB, because it's super fat too!"

It took a few painful seconds before my danish audience got it, but my principal loved it ;)

Piyaar/Mohabbat (both Urdu words meaning 'love') should be there too. Nearly about every Urdu song has them, mostly at least once in every verse. People tend to over-use it, and it's too easy to mistake it.
