It had started raining around seven days ago but as time progressed so did the temperature drop. Right around the fourth day the power went out in the house, and never came back on again. It was the worst winter storm Alex could remember. Tree limbs were falling everywhere because they couldn’t bear the weight of the ice. The limbs could take some blame of knocking out power because of snapping power lines but this was different. Alex didn’t know how he knew it was different but he had a hunch.
Alex, his dad, his fiancé, and his cousin were all at the house when the power went out. First it flickered on and off for about thirty seconds before going dead for good. The house is a rundown house but it’s still habitable. It has two floors and a basement. The fireplace that separates the dinning room and living room hasn’t worked for ages, which is unfortunate because the furnace, having no power, quit working and the temperature in the house is slowly but surely dropping. Luckily, Alex likes drinking water so his dad buys bottled water (who likes city water anyway?), so they have had something to drink.
Alex opened his eyes as the alarm on his watch started to go off. He turned it off with a press of a button, rolled over and snuggled up against his soon-to-be wife. He didn’t want to get up because it was freezing above the covers, but he knew he needed to see the damage outside the rain/ice/snow still hadn’t let up. After a week he thought it should have been gone. Kissing Louise on the forehead he slid out from underneath the covers.
Alex’s dad and cousin slept in his dad’s room because there wasn’t enough room for all four of them to sleep in the same bed. As Alex passed by the room he could see them both sleeping in the same bed knowing full well it was for the body heat to keep them warm. Alex looked out the window at the top of the stairs to see what it looked like outside. He couldn’t see a thing. For a week now there had been no sunlight. Alex thought it was odd that not even a single sliver of sun broke through the clouds.
Outside it was pitch black. With no power getting to the street lights Alex couldn’t see a thing. His eyes were well adjusted to the darkness by now. The howls of coyotes could be heard breaking through the doldrums of silence. The cracking of tree limbs being pushed to their limit mixed in with the howls to make a hideous melody. Alex stared a moment longer before heading down stairs to start breakfast, which was another source of concern; there wasn’t enough food for all four of them for another week.
2
Everybody was awake and fully dressed in their winter clothing eating their breakfast. Alex had made the last of the eggs. From now on it would be oatmeal.
“When should we go into to town and get some food?” Alex asked his dad.
“I guess we should try today if the weather clears up,” Nick said in-between bites.
“How bad is it out there?” Patrick, Alex’s cousin, asked.
“Still pretty bad, I think it finally stopped snowing or raining or whatever it was doing out there,” Alex answered. “Well, whenever you’re ready Dad we can head out.”
“Alex, why are you so anxious to head already?” Louise asked.
“Aw come on, Lou. We’re almost out of food and we need more water because this house is so old that the cold froze the pipes.”
Louise smiled her perfect smile at Alex and went on eating. Alex loved her more than he thought he would ever love someone. He couldn’t wait to be her husband and to support her and make her happy. He would do anything for her even die for her if need be.
3
“Alright, are you guys ready?” Nick hollered zipping up his coat.
“Yeah, we’re ready Uncle Nick,” Patrick said. With one look around, they all headed out into the freezing temperature outside.
Before Alex could reach the door there was a sound of shattering glass upstairs and a bang as if something just jumped through the window and landed on the floor. Alex whipped around to see the eyes of everybody wide and searching.
“What was that?” Patrick asked. Patrick was only sixteen and very much afraid of being by himself in the dark.
“I have no idea,” Alex’s voice was steady and unnerved. “Dad, do you want to go up with me and check it out?”
“Yeah, let me go get the hatchet in the kitchen,” Nick said turning toward the kitchen. “Give me the flashlight.”
Alex handed him the flashlight and went to stand next to the staircase door. He pressed his head up against the door to see if he could hear anything upstairs. His heart was pounding from the adrenaline rush he was experiencing. His only thought was making sure everybody was safe, especially Louise.
Nick was in the kitchen trying to remember where he put the hatchet. Finally it dawned on him that he had put it in the basement before the storm hit. He called back to the kids, “Hey I got to go to the basement to get the hatchet.”
“No, don’t go down there. What if something or someone is down there? You know that it opens up to the garage,” Louise said, her voice trembling.
“Here, Dad, give me the flashlight and I will go down,” Alex proposed.
“No. Here’s the flashlight. I will take a candle down.”
“Why don’t you use the flashlight Uncle Nick?” Patrick asked clearly frightened and shivering from the fright.
“Because I don’t need it and we need it once we go outside.”
With Nick’s mind finally set he gave Alex the flashlight, hugged Patrick, and kissed Louise on the cheek, then lit the candle and headed into the kitchen where the basement door stood.

Once Nick stood in front of the basement door he was having second thoughts. His mind raced with what Louise had said, “What if something or someone is down there?” He was pretty sure the basement door that attached to the garage was locked, but he hadn’t been down there for so long.
He reached for the knob, heart pounding and mouth drying. He twisted the knob only a quarter of the way when he heard the scream of something that was either dying or praying for death. The sound of the scream penetrated Nick’s courage and ripped it apart. Sounding half-human and half-animal it terrified Nick. He stepped back from the door to head back to the guys when the door swung open. In the halo of the candle the being’s face was captured. It had no hair at all, very muscular, and razor sharp teeth and claws. Its eyes were a bright yellow. It dawned on him that these were the eyes they all had been seeing outside; they had all thought the eyes belonged to coyotes. Nick’s scream was cut short when the dark green monster ripped out his throat.

Alex had decided to go ahead and go upstairs after his dad left to go to the basement. Walking slowly and watching above them so the thing would not jump on top of them while they walked up the stairs. Patrick had closed the door behind them once they were on the stairs. The only protection they had was in Alex’s pocket in the form of a three inch blade knife.
Reaching the top of the stairs they turned to Nick’s room and saw that the window was shattered bringing in freezing air in gusts. Everybody was shivering now; the temperature seemed to be sub-zero. Alex started toward the room when Louise grabbed him, “Don’t go until your dad gets back.”
“Lou, there’s nothing in there. Let me go cover the window with something,” Alex said gently pulling away from her. “Stay here with Patrick.”
Patrick was pale; Alex didn’t know if it was because of fright or the temperature. He started toward the room when there was a bang from downstairs. Louise screamed. Patrick was finally pushed to his limit and passed out. In a mere second Alex swiveled around and shoved Louise forward toward the room while he bent down and started to drag Patrick. The bang came again but much closer. Something slammed into the staircase door. “Run, Lou, run.”
Alex finally pulled Patrick into the room and slammed the door as the sound of the staircase door being splintered to a million pieces of wood echoed up the empty stairwell. Louise screamed when she saw the dead body of a mutilated coyote on the floor next to the window. Alex heaved Patrick onto the bed.
“Quiet,” Alex hissed. He was trying to listen for whatever was outside the door. He could hear it making its way up the stairs. Its breathing was raspy and coarse. Then the sound of walking ceased. There were a couple of seconds where silence occupied space. Then a series of clicks then a long guttural yell came from the beast outside the door. It spoke in a tongue that was neither known nor earth-like to Alex’s ears.
“Go out the window,” Alex whispered, “now.” Alex went to Patrick and started to wake him. The thing behind the door continued to speak when suddenly it stopped as if knowing that the humans he was hunting was trying to escape. The beast let out an angry scream. All day Alex had been even keeled the sound of that scream sent shivers down Alex’s back.
Patrick finally woke up at the sound of the scream; he, too, was about to scream when Alex clamped his hand over Patrick’s mouth. Alex pointed out the window where Louise stood shivering. Patrick got out of bed, tip-toed to the window and stepped out onto the roof. Alex looked around to see if they could use anything for when they were outside. He stepped out behind Patrick, shining the flashlight on the roof to show the way.
“What are we going to do now? We can’t see but three feet in front of us,” Patrick said, fear tumbling out of him in the barrels. Alex was thinking of a plan when the bedroom door shattered. Alex whipped around and saw the beast for what it was. It was ugly. Its deformed face didn’t look anything like a human. It was indescribable.
“Go, go, go. Jump,” Alex said shooing Patrick and Louise forward.
Without a second guess they all ran and jumped, plummeting the 12 feet to the ground. Luckily the snow was the last to fall so it cushioned their land a little. Upon jumping Alex had dropped the flashlight which ended up pointing up toward the sky. And in the sky was the reason for the week long weather and darkness. A huge disc covered the atmosphere. Alex stared in awe up at the huge disc that held more beasts like the one that was hunting them. An invisibility shield, Alex thought. That’s the only way nobody knew it was up there. A scream from Louise brought him back to reality. He grabbed the flashlight and pointed it toward the scream.
There standing above Patrick was the monster. It was crouched down in an attack position rocking backing and forth on its toes; waiting to pounce. It looked at Patrick to Louise to Alex, then stopped and stared at Alex its yellow eyes penetrating like a knife to flesh. Alex stared back. Alex moved his hand slowly toward his pocket that kept his knife. Louise was inching closer to Alex while Patrick sat there terrified to move. Louise moved and inch too much; the creature snapped its head in her direction. That’s when Alex decided to attack.
For Alex the next couple of moments moved in slow motion. He would barely see the death of his loved one. The creature moved too quickly making Alex think it could read minds. Alex had yelled at Louise to catch the flashlight and tossed it toward her; purposely throwing it a little out of her reach so to make her dive for it. Alex ran toward the beast with the knife blade curved toward his forearm. The creature jumped toward Patrick and with one deathly swipe of its five-bladed hand sliced Patrick’s face open. Red squirted out from the wounds marring the perfect white snow. Blood spilled in the pints. All this Alex saw out of the corner of his eyes. He never took his eyes off the creature’s neck. Alex launched himself toward the creature arms extended. Alex felt the searing pain of being raked along the back with the creatures claws. Alex pushed passed the pain to pin the creature down. Alex proceeded to first slice the throat of the creature then moved to stab it in any place Alex could feel.
In an instant Louise came over and pulled Alex off of the creature. Breathing hard from the fight Alex forced out, “Are you alright?” Louise could only nod her head. He got up and looked at the creature with the flashlight. Alex had been lucky, but at a cost. He lost his cousin and he figured it had killed his dad while he was in the basement. Alex had no time to grieve because he felt that more would be coming. As long as he had Lou he wouldn’t care what happened.
“What do we do now?” Louise asked in a small voice. She was drained from the ordeal already.
“I don’t…” Alex was interrupted by a beam of yellow light that came down from the disc that hovered in the sky, and then at the base of the light formed a figure. Alex was tensing up to fight when Louise touched his shoulder to ease up. The figure walked up to Alex and Louise and posed one question, “Will you please come with me?”
Stunned that the beast that looked exactly like the one that Alex had just massacred knew English the two just looked at it dumbfounded. The figure extended a hand that was clear of razor sharp claws. Alex shook his head once and pointed toward the light, “You go first, we follow.”

Inside the ship the two were sitting in a room that was both wide and long. They no longer felt nervous about being inside the ship because the creature had given them warm clothes and got a doctor for Alex’s back. The creature had told them that he had some very important information for them to hear, but first he needed to make sure things were alright to set into motion.
The creature came back into the room with a platter of food and drinks. It set it down in front of them on the table and sat across from Alex and Louise.
“Okay, let’s begin. I am Mirdok. I have been chosen to explain to you humans what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen,” Mirdok said looking at them earnestly.
“Okay,” Alex said, intrigued.
“Let me begin with what is happening. The human race is being harvested by us, Anunaki. You are currently on the planet, Nibiru. We, the Anunaki, created humans to do work on the planet and to cultivate it. Well, let’s just say You have failed. So we are harvesting You.”
“Harvesting? You mean killing us to eat or just killing us to be rid of us?” Louise asked.
“To eat of course. And please do not interrupt me. Now where was I? Oh, yeah, we love the taste of human meat but what would be the use of killing you before you did our work. We can be quite lazy. Now I will inform you to what has happened. This isn’t the first time we have been here. This is actually the third time. The first was to create you. The second time is a time that you both should know because I’m sure you both have heard of it.”
“Noah’s Ark.” Alex said with no hesitation.
“Correct. Oh I can see why they picked you two. Well then now that you know that then I guess I can skip to the “what will happen” part. This is the most fun for me because the surprised looks that we get when we tell the Chosen Ones.
“We have picked you two to start the human race over again. We have been following you since you were born. We know everything about you two and we think you would be perfect for the job as the new Adam and Eve. We will create the Garden of Eden and do everything to support the Bible.
“I guess if you haven’t figured it out that we have actually been here more than three times. We come three times in the Bible: Creation, Noah’s Ark, and Revelation. But instead of killing humans and leaving this planet we simply start over. Have two of the top humans stay and start from scratch. Earth gives us what we need to survive but like I said us Anunaki are quiet lazy.”
Alex and Louise look at each other in utter and total disbelief.
