Hi everyone, I also like the works of the Bronte sisters. My favourite is Jane Eyre. The girls' lives were rather tragic. At least 2 of their siblings died young, of tuberulosis, later their mother died, as well as their brother. Eventually Anne and Emily died of tuberulosis as well. Charlotte married whilst in her thirties, became pregnant and died of dehydration due to acute morning sickness. (no saline drips available in those days). Who knows how many wonderful books we missed out on due to the early deaths of these wonderful women ?? Happy reading to all from alicemay in Australia.

Hi, all. I am new to this site, as well, but am thrilled I have found it. I just finished the Tenant of Wildfell Hall and no one I know has read it. I am totally confused about Helen's choice of Gilbert Markum. He doesn't seem much different from the other men of the time. He's violent (almost killed her brother), self absorbed, single minded and egotistical. I was waiting for her to reject him, but she didn't. Maybe I'm looking at him from a 21st century perspective. He did seem to change to a less selfish person - although, he stopped visiting her brother when it suited his purposes. Maybe that's just human nature. Anyway, I'm going into stream of consciousness. Any insights would be welcome.
