I need to write a "Statement of Purpose" for English graduate school, but can find no samples online of previously written statements, nor any list informing me what to include in the statement. I have read what "not" to include, but telling me what not to include is not akin to telling me what to include! That leaves lots of room for me to include everything else and the sofa!

Anyone got any great advice?

THANKS!!!!!!!!!

oh my, these folks seem to have a knack for making applicants' life hard.
I'm sure kratsy and Petrarch will be able to help you :)

meanwhile, would you care to share some of the things you're not supposed to include? maybe they're funny? :D

Why would you want to have a sample of something written by someone else? I think it's better to be yourself in your original way.

I wrote a statement of purpose for an American university, I included my previous studies, my love for the US and for the English language, I said why I want to go to this University in particular and described which courses I wished to take, and how they would be complementary to what I have done until now. I said why this project was so close to my heart, why I had waited to do it and why I was now ready. I think what really matters is to open one's heart and be honest.

SW - don't state the obvious, such as "I want to teach", "I love reading" etc. This stuff is so bogus. I am thinking of offering my first newborn and see if they will accept that as payment.
