MAKING DO

Into the misted raw corners
of our basement selves, like bargainers
grovelling for one last hour
at the sale, we go hollow-eyed
for truth. Truth, truth is the teat
we want to suck at. No other milk
will do. Or if not milk,
pop. And if the teat is too hard to reach,
a straw.

Our necks are half-dislocated
from trying to get at the pop
an extra second before it comes up that straw.

Mesmerizing and beguiling indeed!

I like these lines. they could stand for themselves as a mini-poem or some sort of aphorism/proverb/saying thingy.
but it sounds a bit more desperate than just 'making do', as if those people would settle for anything, if they can't have 'truth'

Well, I meant to sound skeptical about this 'truth' they were desperate for, something more like that brilliant coinage - is it by John Stewart? - "truthiness".

OMG! I forgot that you live on the extreme outer edge of the civilized world. John Stewart is.. well, he's.. well, he's THE MAN. He's the moderator of a parody evening news show called, I think, "The Daily Show". Generally scathing about the pomposity and deceit of US politicians...

Whoops, it may be I who am living far from the center of things! The originator of "truthiness" was actually Stephen Colbert, the moderator of a satirical show called The Colbert Report. I believe he intends it to mean things that one knows in one's gut to be the truth, without having to check it out but I like to think it could also be used to mean the semblance of truth, just as some candies are chocolate-flavoured but contain no actual chocolate.

Ah! The operative word being misted? In this world who can get beyond truthiness.

I very much enjoyed the construction of this from the first line. Are you saying we think that the closer the "milk of truth" is to the teat, the truer it might be? You have made excellent word choices and put them together very close to the, dare I say, truth of things.

Now, I go to see my chiropractor.

The chiropracter may align your spine
and tinker with your musculoskeletal system
but let him not attempt any vertebral subluxation
of a single line of your poems
where every vertebra is strong and true!
