Dear All,

The Literature Network will hold an annual short story competition, which will be open to all its members. The rules of the competition are:

1. The stories should be submitted as email attachments in MS Word format and should be minimum 500 and maximum 2000 words and include your Forum names as well. Please send your stories to [email protected]. Please do not post your stories on the Forum!

2. There will be 5 selections (in February, April, June, August and October) throughout the year and only the stories which have been submitted by the first of these months latest will be included in that month's elimination. The five stories which win the each selection will take part in the final voting in November and December.

3. Members can submit only one entry for each selection round. If their story is a winner, they will not be allowed to take part in other selections.

4. The Admin or Moderators are not responsible for editing or correcting of the stories and therefore the writers themselves are required to make sure that there are no grammatical or spelling errors. The submitted copy is final and further corrections by the writers will be disregarded.

5. Please still submit your stories in MS Word.docs. or Rich Text.rtf or Notepad.txt files, but PLAIN TEXT only.

If you want to FORMAT your stories, use the vBulletin forum codes, which can be found here:

http://www.online-literature.com/forums/misc.php?do=bbcode

6. Only those members with at least 100 posts by each voting period can submit stories for the competition and vote in the polls.

7. Those who enter the competition agree to keep the information on their identities and stories confidential till the end of that year (only the Admin and Moderators will have access to that information). Those who breach this rule will be disqualified automatically.

8. All entries should be your own original work and not have appeared anywhere else before. Authors retain the copyright rights for the stories submitted to the competition.

9. All submissions must be your sole creative work and written for this particular competition. Anyone found plagiarising will be disqualified from this and all future contests.

10. If one of the 5 entrants selected for the final vote are no longer a member of the site at the time of the final vote, they forfeit their entry and the second place entry for their leg of entries gets bumped to first place.

Good luck! :)

Those members who would like to take part in the first elimination in February can send their entries now (no later than January 31st).

--

Please post to this thread only if you have specific questions about the competition and we will try to answer as soon as possible.

If I want to participate, and I couldn't submit my story before Jan, 31st. Am I allowed to submit it before the other selections take place?

Yes of course Nossa, there will be a total of 5 selections (in February, April, June, August and October) so if you don't get it in on time for the Feb. one you can submit it for the April one :)

5. Please still submit your stories in MS Word.docs. or Rich Text.rtf or Notepad.txt files, but PLAIN TEXT only.

Does that mean no italics or bold?

Logos

Yes Dick you can still use bolding, underline, italics, etc. just please use the vBulletin codes to create them (as you would creating a forum post bascially) not html :)

yeah, where are they? I've been waiting for them tooYes, it is the day and now the poll is open.

Since everyone is so eager, there won't be any shortage of voters this time round, I guess! :p

As Virgil mentioned somewhere else, unfortunately Moderating is not our day job and we still have to work and pretend to have families and even lives at times. That said, as soon as someone pays us, we can always consider taking up the offer and post stories and poems alike first thing in the mornings of the announced days - before you guys even get out of your warm beds! :p

However, sorry for keeping you all waiting; now, let's get reading and voting! :)

When is the last chance to submit a short story, October?

Why is it important to have 100 posts? Is it because you people want to see the person is interested and wander around here constantly?

I am interested but not for me if not for my wife to join to the forum and participate.

By the way I am new here. So, hi! ;)

Scheherazade
05-18-2008, 05:28 PM
You can submit your stories till end of September to be able to take part in October elimination.

This competition is for the members of this community so we would like those who take part to be established members of the Forum.

Perhaps I can log enough posts and have a pretty piece ready to roll before October, if I understand the rules. Sounds like fun, and I have been starved of late to engage again in literary communities, although I have some hesitation about fully embracing OLF. I won't state why. :crash:

Is there a place where this year's eliminated stories can be read?

Do I understand correctly, one needs to have made 100 or more posts before one can: vote? enter the completion?

Thanks.

Scheherazade
07-10-2008, 04:57 PM
Ctalerico> Yes, you need to have at least 100 posts to be able to vote or enter the competition.

Once an elimination round is over, the stories are removed from the public section. It is up to individual writers to decide whether they would like to post it again. Hence, there is no special section for the eliminated stories.

Welcome to the Forum, by the way! :)

I've discovered this passion for writing lately and I think writing short stories is my first step towards being a writer someday... Anyway, my ultimate dream in life aside from being a naturopathic physician or culinary chef is to be an author of a bestselling novel... Yeah, it sounds really hard but as long as I'm able to express myself through writing, I feel like I already get an A+ for being brave enough to try... I've submitted my articles and I failed to see those published for a number of times already but at the end of the day, it is doing something that I really love that matters:)
I hope I'd be able to qualify for the competition in due time and let my voice be heard

Is there any way that I can make posts quickly?

Scheherazade
08-01-2008, 07:07 AM
Sure... Go to the Games section :)

Do you check for proper usage of vocabulary and grammer when stories are submitted to you?

Scheherazade
09-15-2008, 05:02 AM
Do you check for proper usage of vocabulary and grammer when stories are submitted to you?No, we don't check for such things. It is the author's responsibility to make sure that the language is the way they intend to appear. The submitted version is the final.

Scheherazade

The competition is still going on: The October elimination is still open.

It is not possible to submit stories for this year's competition but next year's competition will start in January.

But I guess you already knew these as they are already stated in the very post of this very thread. :p

I want to intimate / apprise u that the FORUM rules have the spellings of BREECH while the actual spelling is BREACH.....
Such a blunder from the FORUM LEADERS, can not be expected....Plz mend it. Sorry, if I hurt anyone but bringing it to notice was my moral duty and what on hell stops the other members to bring it to the notice of one and all......
Can I post my story after I post 100 posts, or not?

Is only one award given per year?
Any of stories is published in book form or not?
Any other motivation for the story writers?

Scheherazade
12-09-2008, 06:12 AM
Pf. HS Dimple,

Thank you for bringing the spelling mistake to our attention.

There is only one competition and one award on the Forum. You might appreciate that this is a free Forum, which does not require membership fees so it is very generous of the Admin to offer such prize in the first place.

We hope that the writers who are taking part in this competition are already motivated enough to write (with or without the enticement of financial rewards).

I have one more question, which i put elsewhere but got no reply and it is that i was told as per insturctions that there is need to have 100 posts to ur credit to enable ur self to vote but as a try i tried and my vote was cast and it was without going thru the text of all stories and i want it cancelled.....

what to do?

Scheherazade
12-14-2008, 05:52 PM
I am afraid once you cast your vote, we cannot cancel it.

PS: Your question was already answered here (post #30): http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?p=647636#post647636
