View Full Version : Names if we have a girl

Leo and I were able to pick a boy's name very easily. It would be William Gordon. William because we both simply like it. I had a very good friend in high school named Will and I think Leo likes the name because of William Wallace. Gordon is his dad's name. We've been at a loss to agree on a name for a girl, however, mostly because he thinks no one would like the names that I keep suggesting (he thinks their weird). So I thought you guys could help me convince him that people would like the names that I've suggested (or just convince me that they really are too weird  ) My first choice really would be Elizabeth, but he has an aunt Liz that I guess he doesn't care for. Anyway, once I figure out how to get the poll going, you'll see that most of these are Irish or Scottish names. Please cast a vote and let me know what you think!

lol, Sarah is the name of the main character in the book I'm writing. I'd feel weird giving my daughter that name.

I like Eowyn very much too.

I voted for Finola and Iona out of the names you had in the poll. I like them! :thumbs_up
If I had a girl, I'd want to name her Miranda, and my boyfriend would want her name to be Saga (meaning Fairytale in Swedish). We'd have problems coming up with a boys name if we were to have a baby, which we are not. :)

Ooooh, This is great! I'm already getting other ideas for names that I like. I like Miranda too.

I would not name the child Lorna because there are cookies called Lorna Doone and I know someone will call her "Lorna Doone" and she will just hate that.

Someone suggested Sara and I strongly advise against Sara. All her life she will hear the following:

"Is that Sara with an h or without?"
"Hey there Sara Bellum."
"Hey there Sara Lee"
"Sara, Smile - Sara " - I think that's a Hall and Oates song (it's kind of hard to convey how annoying that is without the music you know).
"Sara - Sara." that is a starship song. (although those songs will probably have been forgotten except by some old fart by the time she gets old enough to care, so those aren't real good reasons at all)

Plus, Sara is such a common name. You don't want to name her something so weird that people can't pronounce it, but there are too many Sara's now.

I voted for "Ealasaid" and "these are all too weird"... yep, I know that's a bit contradictory... I think all of them are too weird, but out of the names you've suggested I like Ealasaid best.
How about
Gillian
Gwenhwyfar/ Guinevere
Vanessa
Minerva

sorry.. I suck at girls' names.

Hear, hear, there is another (sorry to annoy you with so many suggestions amongst which most are not probably very good :p ).

Fiona (<- shreck)Finola;
Iona (pronounced "eye-own-a" (I own iona)
Ailis (pronounced "aye-lish" (eye lash)

kids are realy cruel, thats one of the things i considered when picking names... umm. i had Elizabeth Rain for the girl and William donte for the boy. also elissisa clare. or james matthew. anna clare marie is pretty too. those are just some possibilitys i had considered, but im not sure where your from and all... so sorry if it wasnt verry helpfull

What a pleasant surprise! I love this name. :) We have it a bit common here in Pakistan (though not as much as Sara). How do you pronounce it there? I feel curious. :)

Here, it's something like: Mur-yam.

Miriam would be pronounced exactly the way it's spelled Miri-am. my name is spelled with a j in the middle, Mirjam (but I often use the i version in international settings). this is pronounced either like Miriam or like 'Miryam'. so the j is pronounced like y in English

Nice. I think it's in the same way as we do it here, though 'mir' is pronounced like 'mur' in 'murmer'. :) I thought the first foreign Miriam I encountered was in Sons and Lovers which I read about six months ago, but now you prove me wrong. :p

Anyway, congratulations!

hehe, it's not the most common name over here, but it was kinda popular in Germany, Netherlands etc around the time I was born, so there are a lot of Miriams in my age bracket

I agree with Uncle Virge for once, Julia is a really cool name.
Or how about Alessa or Alexa? Or Patricia. I like Patricia, but maybe it sounds old-fashioned or posh and snooty in English?
Clarice is cool,too.
Sylvia isn't too bad, either.

I see a lot of people are voting for Ealasaid. Just thout i'd mention that because of the way its pronounced in gaelic (yala satch-welsh gaelic, 'ee-la-say-d'- scots gaelic) you just know people are going to make jokes about the name. But you could always call her elly for short.
I went with Ailis. I think thats abeautiful name.
And finola- you could always go with the Irish gaelic spelling Fionnuala (fee-un-nu-la) she was the daughter of Lir and was turned into a swan with her brothers by their evil step mother Aoife(eefa)
If its gaelic names you are after, i'm full of them!
Aine (awn-ye)
Sorcha
Sheena
Fiona(fee-ona) (or proper gaelic Fionna-fee-un a)
Niamh:p (neev)
Deirdre (dear- dra)
Emer
Alanna
Aislinn (ash lin)
Meave
Keeva (actually Caoimhe in irish)

I second that. In fact, I voted for the 'too weird' option. The first one sounds pretty but I'd have no clue on earth on how to pronounce it, and you can't expect people to know Gaelic... Finola or whatever it was sounds - sorry - ridicolous to me, but it might be because in my language the -ola suffix indicate something cute in a funny way. Same for Catriona, -ona is a suffix for big things for me so unless she's obese, it wouldn't sound nice. Lorna is possibly the most 'normal' one, I knew a girl called that but it felt too weird because she was here in Italy, I guess in the USA such a name wouldn't be weird. Iona makes me think of chemistry. The other(s?) sound nice but they simply don't look like people's names to me...

If I wanted to give a weird, pompous and meaningful name to a baby, I'd keep it as middle name, and give a simple but nice name as the first, so that the kid won't have to be embarrassed all her life, and she will have a name she can actually spell and she won't have to always correct the way people spell it or say it. Not to mention the old story of other kids making fun of her, but well that can happen even with the most common names.

There normal to me!:p

[they're ;)]
 Right, so it turns out they're actually people's names... but well I guess they make sense in their own culture... (we get kids called Jennifer here and my mum was wondering how they learn to spell their own name as technically J is not part of our alphabet ). I don't like the tendency to give foreign names just to be fancy... Although I guess that the US are much more mixed so it's less noticeable...

Alexandra - Alex
Andrea - Andy
Nadya - Naddie

I'm so bad with female names. Most of the time, when I thought about a baby girl's name, the name Sydney always popped up first. :)

i like Lorna. i mean, my favorite teacher is named that.. she's extremely pretty, extremely bright and extremely kind.. she taught me so much too, so i like Lorna and maybe other names you can derive from it.

as far as the other names go, they're pretty strange to me, but hey, to each his own culture, i guess. i've always liked the name Anne, though

congratulations on having to name a baby!

Wow..... As sombody still in high school let me give you a perspective from the teenager veiw.... any teen would hate being called Ealasaid....
I know a girl with an interesting name and even the teachers stop through the register and say things like: unusual name there!
You're looking for somthing practical, unscrutinizable (Probably not a real word)
and still nice, not to be unhelpful but you've got your work cut out....
Id be looking at names like Carmen, Ocean (met a girl named that once) or Raiyn.

I ... couldn't vote for any of them. Some are very beautiful, but I'd have to know YOU better so as to say.

For instance, if my first baby happens to be a girl, she'll be named after my family.

Like, lets pretend my name's Tim(othy) Daniels, her name would be Danielle or Daniella.

If my first born is a boy, he'll bear either my name, or my father's.

My father has two names, one Hebrewish, and another Germanish, like Simon William (Daniels)

So, I'd name him probably William.

My second child would be Simon or Willermina. Or in homage of my wife's father or mother.

That's how I (intend to) do.

All this is mere hypothesis ... I don't even have a girlfriend!

It'd be Danielle Daniels ... Until she got married.

But, even when she got married, she'd still belong to the Daniels, anyway, even if she changed her name. This would be the firstborn girl.

Very important!

I voted for Catriona, which I think is a very pretty name.

Personally, my favorite girl's names are Rachel and Sara. I also like Marley and Carly (are you having twins?). I love the name Rainey. How about Azul (blue in Spanish)?

How about Rory (Ruari) (which I adore)? Or Siobhan, which I think is both interesting and beautiful.

Or, a nice choice for a Scottish name is Leslie, which means 'from the gray fort'. It has the added advantage of being MY name, which of course, makes me quite partial to it!!! :D

Anyhoo, whatever you and your husband decide, Shay, will be quite beautiful, as will your baby. May all the days between now and its birth be blessed ones, and may all the days thereafter be blessed, too!!!

Ealasaid, daughter of Leo(nard?).

Leo ... Lion!

She'll be the daughter of a lion. Think of that. If it's worth thinking ...

Thanks for sharing and trusting us for such a ... 'n important part of your life. I feel honoured above my merit! :)

 Hi Timmy! Good to meet you too!

Yeah, as crisaor pointed out, we had the baby. His name is William. It was a good thing he was a boy because we were still unsettled about a girl's name. I think now though, if we had a girl, she will be Ella. I'll have to compromise quite a lot on that one. I was willing to call her Ella, but have Ealasaid on the birth certificate, but Leo still wouldn't budge on that. So she'll be Ella (I really hope we have a girl next time! ;) ) , but I'll probably call her Ealasaid from time to time anyway. (SHHH! Don't tell Leo that! :P ) When she's old enough, she can make a decision if she wants to change it legally. :D

Please do!! I like Liam, and so do my Irish relatives. Leo however thinks its too unusual. He can be such a stick in the mud sometimes... Anyway, Liam is great except for today. Isn't that usually the case? He was being difficult because my boss's assistant suddenly asked me to complete a project by 3 this afternoon, so, as if he knew I was on a deadline, he didn't nap as usual and he wanted to check out all the wires in all the outlets too. I think he was just getting me back for staying at home with him instead of taking him out to the nearby shopping center so that he could flirt with all the ladies. :D He loves people!!

Anyway, Grandma and Grampa are coming down tomorrow to stay for a few weeks. We are very excited about that!
