I Didn't Get What I Wanted

Courtesy demands a certain grace
which crass tallying disdains.
It expects a grateful smile on a face
wrapped around the wish list that remains.
That the Present sits wanting still
gifts of no cost -- few are to blame;
to those who freely offered good will:
a joyous thank you just the same.
But the wealthy, whose power knows no dearth,
in no season are icily taken to task
for holding back the priceless peace for earth
which the world forever kneels to ask.
On a rare occasion one may believe
it is more blessed to receive.

Thanks for resurrecting an real oldie, Nikolai. It comes from a long ago era when I still used that "Comic" type face. Looking at the ditty now, though, I think maybe the meter's a little off.

There are faint echoes of dear Dotty in this, if you remember my recent PM which contained her, "With Best Wishes," though I see from the original date of posting, my reminder had nothing to do with your poem :)

Certainly the theme is similar, though it lacks the acerbic punch of mistress Parker:

"I've often heard that some there are--

How hard such tales are to believe!
To prove that costlier by far

It is to give than to receive.
On Christmas they present their friends

With motor cars, and pearls in strings,
And blocks of stock with dividends,

And other useful little things.
Though I have no such benefits,

I sing the Christmas spirit's praise.
I know the giver's thrill--for it's

A poor Yule which won't work both ways."

I'd have to agree with your self-assessment of the metre which is a little flawed in places, but it still has its charm!
