I once endevoured to read this book at the age of 12 but failed to get into it miserabley. I now want to try again after reading a synopsis of the novel. Does anybody have any comments on the book and would you recommend it?

Yes, I think you should read it. It's a wonderful novel. Dark but worth a read. You would most certainly find characters annoying and at places difficult to bear with but that is what makes this book great; the complexity of its characters. I would surely suggest you to read it. :)

I'd recommend reading it for one reason, cuz it's a classic and I believe it's sort of a 'must read' kinda book. But I can honestly tell you, I didn't enjoy it much. I agree with Pensive, you'll find the book too dark, cahractersn too annoying, and I personally wasn't convinced or moved by any feelings in the book. But still, you should try reading it for yourself, and who knows, maybe you'll end up liking it.

I loved this book when I read it about one or two years ago, and someday I'll read it once more. :)

I was actually 12 when I first read it (I'd seen the movie and became interested in reading the entire story). I really liked it. The only character that annoys me is Cathy. Personally I can't stand her. It is a very dark story. I enjoy dark stories, though. If you prefer "lighter" stories, I don't know if this would be to your liking. Yet, I do think a person should read it "just because". It is one of the all-time classics. So why not give it a try? You just might end up really liking it.
