hiya, I've got a question for our Muslim members:
some German kindergartens have abolished their Christmas parties (the ones for the children) or made them 'politically correct' by dropping references to Santa Claus or the Christmas Angel (who are not originally Christian anyway). They did this so as not to offend Muslim children and their families.
I thought Muslims honour Jesus as the last but one prophet (the last one before Muhamed) and although they don't celebrate Xmas, they are not opposed to it?
If you guys went to a mixed-faith kindergarten or school, would you or your parents feel offended by Christmas parties or stories?

Hey Sleepy,
I never felt offended by xmas or any of the other Christian celebrations. I don't think it's even right to do so even if you were a Muslim, cuz Islam honours and respects all other religions and def. all the prophets. There's nothing 'politcally correct' about cancelling your plans and parties cuz some people can't hadle the fact that they're not alone on this Earth, there are other people, with different religions and lives, and who have the right to act according to them, same as they do.

yeah, the funny thing is, the Muslims weren't offended at all, but the kindergarten teachers thought they might be offended and acted prematurely.

I don't even know what is even remotely offending about xmas celebrations and parties?! It doesn't make sense to me.

Ooh potentionally senstive topic here Sleepy,t he thing is that most christmasy type things end up reffering to Christ the saviour , or Our lord Jesus, etc etc .. and that is the bit that has a problem oh and having priests or whatevers come and bless all the children... another thing is when my little sister was in kintegten here I think they asked that we keep her home because she kept telling kids that Santa didnt exsist, because obvioulsy we dont have santa... and when she asked why it got explained to her.
And actually the actting prematurley thing has become fairly typical now in the PC world we live in its a bit crazy, I think but its the world we live in.
:D
hope you had a nice christmas sleepy!

not in kindergarten they don't :p. ... sorry, I should have mentioned that kindergarten over here is not like in the U.S. were kids actually learn stuff. it's more like a nursery.. they just play and do silly stuff, I don't think their 'teachers' tell them about complicated things like Christ the saviour or Our lord Jesus. they'd mention Santa Claus and the Christmas Angel (a woman with blond curls who brings the gifts and is supposed to represent Jesus in some obscure way, but that's only because people got it wrong....). I think they normally mention the baby Jesus in the manger, but that's all.

 lot's of Christian kids do that but they don't have to stay home
hope you had a nice christmas sleepy!
thanks. Eid mubarak!

What a pathetic world we live in! This is PC gone mad!

Why should they be! If they are then they know nothing about their Divine Book! Their Scripture refers to them as "People of the Book"

There should not be such offences.

i don't see why anyone should take offense for Christmas. one of my classmates is religiously affiliated with Jehovah's witnesses and they don't celebrate birthdays (but they do celebrate Christmas in October), but when there's a party at my place he's always around, mainly because he loves to hang out at my place. he even has dreams of being a doctor but he may not be able to fulfill them since not even blood transfusions are allowed but they don;t have anything against doctors... i don't see why Christmas should be any different.
It is delicate and all this PC stuff is so weird... Well I don't have much to tell as I'm not Muslim but as our societies become more and more mixed, I wonder how that would become in Italy... I can't imagine a Christmas without all the religious references (I've seen only a nativity thingy in England, there's plenty here) and well honestly it also sucks because even if I'm not religious, I prefer that to all the pointless shiny things that mean Christmas these days... And yes it would take a really annoying person to complain about Christmas when living in a traditionally christian country...
PC sucks :S

No. I was educated in a missionary school and I saw no one even think negative about Christmas. In fact Christmas serves as an additional opportunity to have fun eventhough they don't celebrate it as Christians do. And , Yes any muslim who doesnt believe in or talks ill of in Jesus or Moses or other prophets is NOT a muslim at all ! Infact, I never saw any muslim ever speak ill of Jesus and perchance if he does another muslim would be the first one to avenge Jesus or Moses. Muslims are also commanded to believe in the Bible provided it is the original unadulterated scripture revealed to Jesus. that is part of Islamic faith!
In India muslims celebrate Christmas as well as Hindu holy days with somewhat more fervor but not as a religious duty but only as an extra chance for festivities and fun!

Sleepy, are you sure they weren't extinguishing Christmas because it is a religious holiday? It seems to me the zealously secular have gone raving mad over any religion, whether it's Christianity, Judiism, or Islam. But in predominantly Christian countries like ours, these zealous secularists have no compunction about criticizing their own heritage, rather than offend others. I call it the self hating syndrome that has mostly, I'm afraid to say, supposed intellectuals.

You mean that nobody is supposed to celebrate anything just cuz they're living under a secular system?! Is that even what secularism propagate?!
Plus, xmas has been always celebrated..nobody ever talked about it being cancelled in any year. Now, this didn't even come from the people in question(Muslims), so I guess what they're trying to do (not offending Muslims) would basically be considered an offence to Christians, and it might even arise any Muslim extremists and give them a reason to talk and debate! It's not only pointless, it's leading to a worse result than they planned for.

Virge, this was only at some kindergartens, not everywhere. but it was not zealously secular people who did this but moderately religious/neutral ones who got PC wrong.

er.. I'd hardly call German kindergarten teachers intellectuals. they're some of the dumbest people you can find in skilled/qualified jobs over here.
I think what went wrong was not that they were zealously secular or self-hating, but that they don't learn enough about different religions and customs during their training.

What the hell!
I think there would be things going on in Germany much more offensive for Muslim families. This just makes no sense. Or probably there is some other reason behind it all that they have not showed out in the open...

 I can't generalise but the only kindergarten teacher I know is indeed...er...not too bright!
