(comparison hero essay)
Obviously in different time periods you will always have a good and bad, rival and hero. But they will almost in each and every situation have different ethics and beliefs in what they are fighting for. Here is Beowulf and the movie Gladiator, of course they both have to be completely out of whack if you try comparing them, because one is an epic poem and the other is a movie, what in a right persons mind will it be anything to compare?
The hero’s cycle here can vary in both. Call to adventure, for Beowulf it was an old friend of his and making something out of himself, and to Maximus it was doing his duty serving his emperor. Here are two differences, Beowulf has a background of having a well known father, and Maximus’s background is that he knew the emperor and to his soldiers in being a great general to them, having defeated battles. But to both hero’s they do it for the good of their people and hearts. Helpers, their followers, both had loyalty in their hands, some would turn away but that is a typical thing.
Next step is proving you to yourself, crossing. Could Maximus survive, could Beowulf survive? They both passed that one, but it wasn’t them, it was what gave them hope, and each looked at hope a different way. Maximus looked at hope desperately to get back to his family, and Beowulf looked at it greedily, to be in paradise, and they both crossed that line Maximus made it back home but was not happy, and Beowulf had gotten what he wanted and was not bothered until he once again was called to kill. Testing, they were pushed even farther. Maximus was driven by anger and a good deed to his deceased emperor. Beowulf wanted more riches and was enjoying the attention. So both went after their goals, one was too take a bad seed out and the other was to destroy the fear his people had. And by their sides they had new changed loyal followers.
The supreme ordeal, the big debut, Maximus was faced with fighting others as entertainment for the emperor, who he then met face to face. Then a big green eyed monster came out of the “new” emperor. Beowulf faced a grendel’s mother looking for revenge on her defeated son. And both succeeded, Grendel’s mother died and Maximus gained the loyalty of Rome, and moved Commodus to face the crowd.
The flight, their final goal, to make a lasting impression on the people, Maiximus had done something worth remembering he gave the people back Rome, he gave them another chance, Commodus was killed by foolishness but was too weak to fight Maximus and drugged him then, Maximus fought it and killed him before leaving to heaven, leaving his fellow slaves freedom and something to live by, fight for what is right. Beowulf had died by a dragon’s tooth, with one loyalist by his side, the rest had run off, and were left disgraced hearing their leader died.
Hero types, they categorize them? Yes they do because there can be a variety of them, one to the good side, or one to the bad side, they can be ambitious, greedy, mean, nice, or just not care and do it only because they get pampered. And out of all this hero cycle I did for both, I found quite a lot to compare and contrast with than I did in the first place. These two hero’s were on the good side, and Maximus cared for the people and for himself both, he was loyal, loyal much to take care of Rome for the better. Beowulf, was a kind but greedy sort of hero but for the good, he was only praised and given what he wanted because he had killed the fear people were screaming about. So in general you always will have the authority because you are your own hero you have friends and family, which are people who look up to you, maybe not in every way, but still. A hero is what you make it.
