View Full Version : Are you a Writer or Reader

I'm curious: how many members are writers and how many are readers. Knowing all writers are readers, I've created a few options for the poll.
*Note:
1.) You don't have to be published to be a writer.
2.) Please do not select I just like to read books, if you've selected another option.
3.) Although you can choose all that apply, try to pick the one you identify with the most.

I just read, but maybe one day I'll be able to write something. That would be cool.

I guess I am pretty officially a writer of non-fiction (literary and cultural analysis). Not published yet, but hope to be some day . . . and I actually enjoy writing papers - for me it is just as much of an art and a labor of love as writing fiction and poetry (which I used to do, like all angsty teenagers, haha).

I wouldn't be so sure about that :) I met an American guy on ICQ once who had a crime/thriller novel published and was working on another one but who didn't like reading at all.

I both write and read, and selected three of the options, though I just write the poetry and fiction for fun while the non-fiction is part of my job. None of the above published yet of course. Since childhood I have always thought of writing and reading as deeply intertwined. My love for one is a part of my love for the other, and the question of which I was drawn to first is a bit like the chicken and egg debate. :p

I'm really just a reader who plays with some "poetry" and writes stories for my grandkids to read when they get older so they will know about my family and my childhood. I don't think of myself as a writer or as a poet. But gosh, I love reading and always have. The best job I ever had was working at the Library the summer I was 13. I was in heaven.

I used to be a poet and reader, and I guess I'd be a poet reader, writer of fiction, non-fiction, scientific research, and technical manuals....really, I am an artist...I also take photos, digitize them, make wood sculpture, paint, and make new things, (sometimes I make old things better...I recycle if you know what I mean.)
I am just a reader. If I ever become a writer, I suppose I'll write non-fiction.

both apply to me... although i don;t really know if i count as a playwright. i mean, for our thesis in theater we had to write a one-act play, and i was able to do it. actually, i found doing it rather easy.. i just don't know if the stuff i wrote is any good. lol :)

that makes you a writer, i believe. i write for our school paper too, but in the feature section so it gives me a chance to just splash myself all over the paper, lol. besides, writing news isn't easy.. call it, writing non-fiction. what kind of news do you write, anyway? :)

I'm on my school's newspaper too...I mostly write opinionated responses on issues like the rise of organic food etc. And I write essays and responses to political movements and philosophy for fun. But I'm working on a novel too, and I dabble with poetry; it's mostly like a journal. But I mostly read...I just started writing.

erm, not sure if you mean me or not. Like I mentioned I write occassional articles on sport in general and football in particular. I did get a photo by-line in a national paper once, but I dont really consider it non-fiction or news - I work in the toy dept.

I voted "I just like to read", though I do like writing, too. I thought I can't really call myself a writer, since I never write anything besides what I have to do for school. I enjoy writing essays and such, but I only do it when I have to. Somehow I can't just write something unless I'm told what I have to do :D At school you're always given a subject (or at least some guidelines) and a deadline, and I really need that if I'm going to get anything written
The only things I write in my free time are my livejournal entrys and e-mails to my friends. They're usually quite long and I like writing them, but that kind of stuff doesn't really make one a writer, does it?

I'm a reader and that's it; I have never had the inkling to write anything and poetry just confuses me.

I wouldn't call myself a poet because, well, I just wouldn't -- yet haiku is my passion.
I voted for what I do the most, figuring that this was what applied best to this poll. I write well about things that really go on, and I read. When I attempt fiction, I get tangled up in the Beginning/Middle/End rules, and nothing ever gets a proper finish .... anyhooo

I just read. I tried writing some poems before for school, and they turned out alright, but it's not an art I would want to pursue. Just not my thing. I deeply appreciate it, though, of course! :) However my dad says that maybe I should write history books when I grow up.

I am a reader. I love reading and get a kick out of it too.
Used to write long ago and did OK when I had to take courses at university in writing etc but nothing great really. Now reading is my true passion (it is more fun to be critical of other people's works ;))
If I were to become a writer, I would like to be a playwright, I think...
I write some mediocre verses on the side, but mostly I am a reader and a would-be literary critic.

I'm just a reader now, but I used to write fiction and had a few things published in local literary magazines before Life, the Universe and Everything caught up with me. Perhaps now that I am retired and have all this time on my hands ( ) I ought to take it up again.

Lately, I haven't had time to write much , but I love writing, even if noone will want to read what I have written! I've always been a daydreamer, and just love writing as a way of solidifying all of the worlds that I've created... almost as though by writing them, I elevate them to a higher plane of existence. I'm leaving that bit in because I can't think of a better way of phrasing it, but do not intend to sound quite so arrogant and pontificating...
At the moment, I like writing fantasy/sci-fi/wafflingly philosophical stories, but I want to be a science writer or journalist after university if I don't work out as a research scientist. Being a playwright would also be brilliant, but I really want to work as a writer for Doctor Who. There, I've admitted it :D

Just a reader. I read what I like, rarely follow trends. Like series charcaters the best. Have read way too many comic books over the last 50 years. Favorite accomplsihment fiction wsie--reading every Shadow pulp adventure (325 of them 1931-1949). Seriously started them in 1976 and finished around 2005.

I marked reader and fiction writer.
I've always loved reading, and recently over the summer I've written a bunch of stories for a new hobby. Consequently, it has actually improved my writing skills in the essay department as well.
