This is the story about Scrooge. No, not the miser depicted in the book "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens but a alternate Scrooge who lives an alternate life in a universe very much like ours. This Scrooge has given up his dreams, ambitions and hope and lives his life like a shadow in the deeper shadows of others. Let's go and meet him at his place of work. Look there he is, the tall man with unkept hair and discoloured shirt. He is standing next to his messy desk with his tie half undone. He is talking to someone, a clean shaven gentleman. His boss, Mr. Bob Cratchit.

"Scrooge! Go home. It's Christmas Eve!"

"Bah, humbug!"

"I don't understand you Scrooge. You are always late for work but on this particular day you stay here!"

Scrooge grudingly takes his Boss's advice and leaves. His boss does not know that the reason he stays behind was because of the warmth of the place and nothing else and not because he was a workaholic or anything. He was in fact was the opposite. As he steps out on to the pavement he hears his boss say "Don't forget to come to the party Scrooge". But his Boss knows that Scrooge will not attend. His never done in the past.

For scrooge the prospect of going to his cold and empty house was not appealing but he had no choice as there was no where else for him to go. So he slowly walks home. He passes happy christmas shoppers and carol singers. Kids screaming and laughter of joy. Scrooges ignores all these things.

"Merry Christmas Uncle Scrooge!" says a child of about 8 years old. Scrooge knows the child, it's his nephew. A nephew for which he was not able to buy a single birthday presents - not that he was miserly - but he could not afford one.

"Dad says to come for dinner Uncle".

"Tell him I am busy with work!"

The boy smiles "There will be a plate set for you Uncle".

Scrooge says nothing and walks off.

While he is preparing to go to bed that night Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his deceased friend, Jacob Marley. Scrooge and Marley grew up together. They were best of friends but Scrooge always thought Jacob to be rather dumb and will not amount to anything in life. But seeing his friend in splendid attire he was rather dumb-struck himself.

"Jacob! Is that you!? I thought you died!"

"Die? Not that easily! I have more to give Scrooge! More to give! Death can't take me that easily! How do you like my new suite?"

"It's wonderful and you look great! So you are not a ghost?"

"Of course I am! I have come to warn you Scrooge!"

"Warn me of what? I haven't done anything wrong! I can't give to charity like you do. I have no money to give to anyone!"

"You must mend your ways Scrooge and it's not about the money but about your soul. It is dying, dying Scrooge. Mend your ways! Tonight you will visited by three Spirits: Spirit of the Past, Spirit of the Present and Spirit of the future to show you where you have gone wrong. It's not too late to mend your ways Scrooge. Save yourself. Save yourself...
