Joie de Vivre
All abloom with bright enchanting rags she goes from shop to shop.
Her lovely face is brightened by a wide and cheerful smile.
Her body is perhaps a little thin and they know she can’t spend much—
But quite often she finds that her small budget stretches for this child.
It does not matter if it is raining and the fishmonger was very cross—
And even cheated her of thin supply of coins—she just smiles and nods and goes along.
Somewhere along the day someone who saw will make up for her loss,
And their eyes will meet with special knowledge that one pays who does others wrong.
Next week she finds the fishmonger gives more for what she can pay,
And scarcely will meet her eye, but her smile seems to comfort his spirit and he bows.
Her stopping next at that one certain shop is no mystery, anyway,
Today she chooses carefully from among the shopkeeper’s many bins and rows.
Every eye is upon her as she moves from stall to stall across the marketplace:
Full of happiness, full of the joy of life, how it glows from her thin face!
