When you talk to yourself
do you listen? I mean,
do you really, really listen?
Beneath that confident, moderate
pseudo adult voice do you hear
that eternally unrequited child
crying out: “Mother?
Oh, where are you and why
are your teats so dry?”
When you hear the voice
of one of those who hate or despise you
do you hear, underneath
that raucous, mocking voice
his desperate cry
for your love or approval?
